Free Live Music Across Two Days as Lane Cove Marks International Make Music Day

Lane Cove Council and the Lane Cove Live Music Alliance will host two free live music events across the weekend of 20–21 June as part of International Make Music Day — the global celebration of music held annually on the winter solstice.

About International Make Music Day

Make Music Day originated in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique and is now observed on the same date in more than 750 cities across 120 countries. The event is open to all. Amateur and professional musicians alike are invited to perform in public spaces, with all events free to attend. The Australian Music Association established Australia’s first nationwide Make Music Day in 2018, organising the event in collaboration with the Live Music Office.

Make Music Day is one of several live music initiatives in Lane Cove. The Live Music Zone at The Canopy, established in partnership between Lane Cove Council and local musician Paul Bennett, has operated for over three years and hosted performers across many genres. At any time you may be treated to the sounds of classical, jazz, rock or pop as you visit The Canopy.

Artists can book performance slots throughout the week, with major events like International Jazz Day and International Make Music Day providing additional opportunities for local musicians to perform to a broader audience.

Live Music Zone, Lane Cove Community Bands, Lane Cove Choristers

Of course locals are also regularly treated to all kinds of live performances around the village with Lane Cove Community Bands, soloists, choirs and bands sharing their talents with the community. And all of that before we even talk about the very popular concerts held at The Canopy!

So whether you’re a musician of any kind or just love live music, mark your diaries for International Make Music Day 2026 and come down to Lane Cove and St Leonards to see some local favourites and new faces.
