If your child loves music but doesn’t think of themselves as a dancer, or already plays sport and wants to develop their movement skills, a Local Dance Academy is taking a different approach to dance.
Based at Galuwa Recreation Centre in Northwood, Oasis Movement and Dance Academy offers hip hop-based movement programs for children, teens and adults.
At Oasis, the focus extends beyond learning routines or preparing for performances. Classes combine the foundations of hip hop with street dance, house, breaking, modern movement and athletic development.
The aim is simple: to help participants move with greater confidence, coordination and body awareness.
A dance class for people who don’t think of themselves as dancers
Walking into a dance studio can feel intimidating, particularly for children or adults who have never danced before.
Oasis has been designed to be beginner-friendly, with no expectation that participants will already know the steps or consider themselves a “dancer”.
A typical class can include warm-ups, basic grooves, foundational dance movements, combinations, freestyle activities, movement games and athletic conditioning.
While participants develop dance skills, the classes also focus on rhythm, coordination, balance, agility, timing and confidence.
“Hip hop is our foundation. Movement is our language. Confidence is our outcome.”
Movement skills that can complement sport
Oasis also welcomes children who already play basketball, football, netball, gymnastics or other sports.
The idea isn’t to replace the activities they already enjoy. Instead, the classes are designed to help children develop movement skills that can support their performance across different sports and everyday activities.
It can also offer energetic children another way to be active, creative and challenged in a supportive environment.
It’s not only for children
The same beginner-friendly approach extends to teens and adults.
Many adults have always wanted to try dance but haven’t felt confident walking into a traditional studio. Others are simply looking for an enjoyable and social way to move after a busy day.
At Oasis, participants are encouraged to start at their own level, try something new and enjoy moving to music.
