Welcome to our Lane Cove News week in review. Lane Cove Council will be having two council meetings this week – an extraordinary general meeting was held on Monday 20th June and the regular monthly meeting will be held this Thursday.
Extraordinary Lane Cove Council Meeting
Lane Cove Council held an extraordinary general meeting tonight to discuss a development application in the St Leonards South Precinct.
A Development Application has been submitted for “The Audrey “ at 13 -19 Canberra Ave, St Leonards South. (DA 162/2021). Councillors were concerned that the Lane Cove Council planning team had prepared a report to go to the Sydney North Planning Panel that accepted non compliance with the St Leonards South Development Control Plan. Lane Cove Councillors unanimously resolved to appoint a councillor representative to present to the SNPP to advise them that Lane Cove Council wanted Development Applications to comply with the DCP.
This is a huge statement by Lane Cove Councillors. It’s putting the Lane Cove Council planning team on notice that the Councillors are looking at Development Applications with a fine-tooth comb and will be insisting on compliance with Development Control Plans. Read more here.
Antonio The Flower Man – Update
Signs have now been installed permitting cars to be parked for 15 minutes on Friday, Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays on Burns Bay Road Lane Cove.
Birdwood Lane Building – Render Breaking Up
Birdwood Lane was closed for two days after render started coming off the building near the entrance to Birdwood Lane (see photo below). This is not the first time render has dropped off this building; it happened in February 2016 (see photo below). Render also came off the Atrium Building in 2021. Lane Cove Council should undertake building inspections as so far, no one has been injured, but if more render drops, it could result in an injury.
Roads and Traffic Forum – Save the Date

Anthony Roberts will be hosting a community consultation session for residents in conjunction with In The Cove on traffic and road issues.

Be Careful with Heating this Winter
NSW Health is reminding people to be safe in how they heat their homes and not bring outdoor heaters or BBQs inside due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Dr Richard Broome, Director of Environmental Health at NSW Health, said over the past few weeks, calls to the Poisons Information Centre related to carbon monoxide poisonings have increased.
“Burning charcoal, BBQ coal outdoor heaters, and portable backup generators are some of the biggest concerns,” Dr Broome said.
“The carbon monoxide, which is released from outdoor heaters and BBQs, is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas which means you can’t know that you’re breathing it in.”
When carbon monoxide is breathed in, it displaces oxygen in the blood and deprives the heart, brain and other vital organs of oxygen which can cause unconsciousness and – sadly in some instances – death.
Dr Broome urged people to always use outdoor gas heaters, BBQs and portable generators in well-ventilated outdoor spaces only, and ensure nothing that is intended for outdoor use is brought into the home or garage.
“If you have a gas heater that is approved for indoor use, it’s important to have it serviced regularly by a licenced gas fitter.”
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Prolonged exposure can have very serious consequences.
To minimise your exposure to carbon monoxide this winter, you should:
ensure proper installation of heater and gas supply
make sure that ventilation of the heating space is adequate
avoid using portable generators inside your home or garage, even if the doors and windows are open
If you suspect someone has been exposed to carbon monoxide, contact the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.
Power Outage
A Power Outage impacting Lane Cove on Friday at around 5.00 pm led to people being stuck in the lifts at The Canopy, food venues being left without power and no beer at the Longy!!
Several sets of traffic lights were out, and two schoolboys directed traffic at the Epping Road and Longueville Road traffic lights until the police arrived.

Below is an inspiring story about the youngest female player, Elin Ladmore, to play 100 games for the Lane Cove Cats AFL Club
In the seventy year history of the Mowbray Public School, there have no doubt been many great stories, but the greatest of them all starts with an AFL sponsored visit by a two metre giant by the name of Kurt Tippett.
Does it occur to an eight year old, that the Tippett family genes may offer certain advantages that Ladmore genes may not? No and why should it, because success in sport, as in life, is determined by far more than the length of your shinbone. In any event, to the astonishment of her parents, a young Elin returns home from school announcing her intent to play footy.
2016 marks Elin’s registration with the Lane Cove Cats and she joins the U9 Selwood team. The only girl on the team, she is welcomed by the boys and the coaches. It turns out that not only does she enjoy the game, she’s pretty good at it. A successful and enjoyable season triggers the desire to play another.
2017 harks the arrival of a girls footy team at the Cats and in March of that year, Elin is one of the Famous Five, who play the first girls match against the Mosman Swans, creating the dilemma of staying with her mates or playing with the girls. In true Elin style, she chooses both, ensuring mad Sunday dashes across Sydney when the games are on at different times and a bidding war between the coaches when there is a clash. As Elin is a year or two younger than the older girls, a pattern emerges; one season in the older girls team, followed by a season in the age group below. She becomes a bridge across the girls teams and is instrumental in one team blossoming into a youth girls program.
As a footballer, it is fair to say that Elin does not dream of being a long distance runner. She is that Queen of Queens, the Key Position Player. Her attitude to footy: “I am here and you will kick the ball to me”. A deadly right foot kick for goal and as a forward, a strong defender, who doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty in defence. She is also the first to check on another player’s welfare, be they friend or foe.
Grand Final day 2020. Elin goes down late in the first quarter and gets up gingerly. The medic is called with a “strap that up mate so we can get her back on”. The response is “I think an x-ray might be a better call” and sure enough Elin’s wrist is broken. She’s devastated not to get back on the field, but doesn’t want to make a fuss and spends the rest of the match on the bench with the scribe. Elin doesn’t say much, but she’s worth a listen when she decides to grace you with a few words.
The greatest story has only just begun. The youngest ever player to hit the century for the Cats, there are plenty of seasons left and a career in senior footy beckons. The only question whether it be for her favoured Geelong Cats or a team of which her parents do approve.

Crime, Incidents and Accident Reports
Riverview
Police were called to a location in Riverview around 9 pm Saturday when a silver Volkswagon collided with two other vehicles causing substantial damage. Police attended the scene and allege that the driver of the Volkswagon, a 23-year-old man from Riverview, was uncooperative and smelt strongly of liquor. The man, who only holds a Learner’s licence, allegedly supplied a roadside breath test which was positive but then refused to supply a sample of breath for a breath analysis at Chatswood Police Station. The man’s licence was suspended, and he was charged with Refuse to submit to breath analysis, Learner not accompanied and Negligent driving. The man was refused bail and is due to face Central Court on 22 June.
Mosman
A Mosman man has been arrested and charged after allegedly almost collided with a Police car. Police were patrolling along Kardinia Road around 10 pm on Saturday evening when a Porsche allegedly came around a corner, crossed the centre lines on the road and almost collided head-on with a Police car. Police stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver after he failed a roadside breath test. The man was taken to North Sydney Police Station, where a further breath analysis allegedly produced a high range blood alcohol reading of 0.217. The man’s licence was suspended, and he is due to face Manly Court on 4 August 2022.
Wollstonecraft
A 78-year-old Wollstonecraft man has been charged with Intimidation, Intentionally choke person and Common Assault. It is alleged that three good samaritans stopped to assist the man around 11.00 pm on Friday evening when he was located on the footpath on Shirley Road and appeared to be intoxicated. The man allegedly requested assistance to get up off the footpath and then threatened to stab one person, threatened he had a gun and attempted to strangle a person with a scarf. Attending Police arrested the man, and he is due to face Manly Court on 7 July.
Chatswood
Police were called to a Chinese Restaurant in Victoria Avenue on Tuesday evening regarding two patrons fighting. Police arrived on the scene to find a private room inside the restaurant was a complete mess with broken plates and food all over the floor. Two men who had allegedly been involved in an altercation were both taken to hospital due to high levels of intoxication. Investigations are ongoing.
