2026 Lane Cove Citizenship & Neighbour Day Awards
On Wednesday 17 June, Lane Cove Council held its 2026 Citizenship and Neighbour Awards. The awards acknowledge the contributions of locals who enhance the quality of our community and/or excel in their field.
The 2026 Lane Cove Citizen of the Year is Tom Lawson, recognised for founding The Greenwich Games, his involvement in the Greenwich Community Association and his service to the community as a former Lane Cove Councillor.
In 2025, more than 2,000 people participated in The Greenwich Games, with competitors aged from 2 to 100. Tom was also the driving force behind The Greenwich Games partnering with the NSW Ambulance GoodSAM programme. Greenwich is now officially the area with the highest density of GoodSAM responders not only in NSW — but in the southern hemisphere.
Read more about Tom and the other recipients here.
The Neighbour Day Awards recognise great neighbours and how they support and build community where they live. Read about this year’s award recipients here.
Vale Professor Margaret Burchett (Miggs)
ITC was saddened to learn of the peaceful passing of Professor Margaret Burchett — known to family and friends as Meg or Miggs — on 5 June 2026, aged 91.
A long-time Lane Cove resident, Margaret was a renowned plant and environmental scientist and a much-loved teacher, perhaps best known for her pioneering research into how indoor plants help clean the air we breathe. She is remembered with great warmth by her large family, and by the many colleagues and students whose lives she touched.
Read our full tribute to Margaret here.
Rotary Giving Night
Lane Cove Rotary may be a small club, but its impact is anything but small.
This year, the club raised $85,524 and supported more than 30 organisations through its giving program, including local groups, Australian projects, Rotary programs and international causes.

A Big Week for the Lane Cove Toy Library
Last week was a big one for one of Lane Cove’s most loved community organisations.
On Wednesday 17 June 2026, The Lane Cove Toy Library was awarded the Lane Cove Council Sustainable Organisation Award. This award recognises everything the volunteers do to keep toys, puzzles and games circulating through the community rather than going to landfill.
Then on Friday 19 June, The Lane Cove Toy Library hosted the Toy Libraries Australia NSW Training Day, welcoming toy librarians from across Sydney and Wollongong. It was a great reminder of how much goodwill exists in this sector.
A huge shoutout to the people who helped make the day special:
- Justin from Chargrill Charlie’s, who provided the lunch rolls. We heard they were delicious — and yes, they now do wraps too. Great news if you need catering.
- Jan, one of Lane Cove’s hardworking volunteers, who baked up a storm for morning tea.
Thinking about joining? The library has nearly 2,000 toys, puzzles and games for ages 0 to adult. It is a brilliant way to manage the cost of living without the clutter.
They are also always keen to welcome new volunteers, including:
- Students looking for community service hours
- Mums and bubs looking for a welcoming space
- Retirees — come and meet fellow retired teachers and librarians
Find The Lane Cove Toy Library at 47 Burns Bay Road, Lane Cove, just across from Harris Farm Markets.
The LGA Was Alive With the Sound of Music Over the Weekend
Sunday 21 June was International Make Music Day. Lane Cove Council and the Lane Cove Live Music Alliance combined to host two days of festivities on Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, the action centred around Lane Cove Plaza, The Canopy and the Live Music Zone. The weather was perfect for sitting out and soaking up the talented performers from across multiple genres.
On Sunday, the fun moved to Wadanggari Park in St Leonards, with multiple acts taking to the open stage to share their talents.
Glass Panels Replaced at Lane Cove Plaza
Last Wednesday morning, locals may have noticed some extra activity in the Plaza. Two broken panels were being replaced in the awnings near La Piazza.
Special Investigation: Where Is the Green Sheep?
The beloved children’s book Where Is the Green Sheep? by Mem Fox is coming to life these school holidays.
Monkey Baa Theatre Company’s gorgeous stage version lands at The Concourse, Chatswood in July, with North Sydney performer Ebony Tucker in the cast.
There are only three sessions across Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 July. The show is best suited to children aged 1–6 years. Details and ticket information are here.
Emergency Power Line Repairs in Riverview
Residents on Kallaroo Road, Riverview, may have noticed a power line issue on Sunday night, with Ausgrid crews carrying out emergency repairs well into the early hours of Monday morning.
One local resident told In the Cove that bright orange cables were spotted around 8 pm on Sunday 21 June, with Ausgrid crews arriving at approximately 8.45 pm. Additional repair vehicles were later called in as crews worked to resolve the issue.
The resident said repair crews were still on site at midnight, with at least one nearby household losing power during the incident.
Thanks to a local roving reporter for the photo and information.

Beautiful Tawny Frogmouth Spotted in a Local Backyard
Locals Dianne and Charles Galofaro spotted this gorgeously grumpy-looking tawny frogmouth spending time in their jacaranda tree on Monday, stretching his wing and keeping a very close eye on the humans below.
They had never seen one in their garden before and, luckily for the rest of us, they managed to snap these photos.
Tawny frogmouths are often mistaken for owls, but they are actually more closely related to nightjars. This one has absolutely nailed the “do not disturb” expression.

Just Over the Border: Hunters Hill FOGO Bins Roll Out
Hunters Hill Council’s new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service begins on Monday 6 July, and bin deliveries are now more than halfway through.
If your green garden bin has already been swapped for a new FOGO bin, you can use it for garden waste only on your normal green-waste collection day until the service starts. If your FOGO bin has not arrived yet, keep putting your old green bin out as usual — it will be emptied and collected over the coming weeks. Kitchen caddies and a six-month supply of compostable liners are also being delivered.
From 6 July, FOGO will be collected weekly on the same day as the red general-waste bin. More information is available on the Hunters Hill Council website.
