If you have ever walked past the window on Burns Bay Road at five o’clock and thought about giving up on cooking entirely, this week is going to test you.
Chargrill Charlie’s turns 37 this month, and the Lane Cove store is marking it the way most of us would like to be celebrated, which is with a week of cheap chicken and one very big Saturday.
The chain started in 1989 when the Sher family, newly arrived from South Africa, bought a chicken shop in Coogee. It has grown to around 19 stores across Sydney and Melbourne since, and Lane Cove has had one on Burns Bay Road for years now.
Saturday is the big one
The headline event lands on Saturday 29 August. The first 50 app members at each store will get a free Birthday Feast, which is a whole BBQ chicken, a regular chips and a 1.25 litre Coke. Once those 50 are gone, app members can buy a whole BBQ chicken for $10, limited to 100 chickens per store.
Both offers are in-store only and both require you to be a Chargrill Charlie’s app member. One per customer, while stocks last.

Saturday 29 August, in store, app members only. First 50 get a free whole chicken, chips and drink. After that it is $10 a chicken until they hit 100.
The rest of the week
Every weekday has its own offer, and they run through the app rather than at the counter. Each one is that day only.

- Wednesday 26 August — chicken and chips for $19.89, a nod to the year it all started
- Thursday 27 August — free dessert with a Family Pack
- Friday 28 August — hot chips for $1
Monday’s wrap deal is available for click and collect or delivery through the Specials section of the app. There is also a rewards offer running on Monday, with small chips going for 250 coins instead of the usual 500.
Worth knowing before you go
All of the offers are tied to the app, so if you are not signed up, that is the first job. Offers cannot be combined with anything else, extras and add-ons cost more, and the daily deals do not carry over.
The Saturday offers are in-store only, so this is not one to order from the couch.
