Lane Cove Council Marks New 50m Outdoor Pool Construction Milestone

The Lane Cove 50m Pool construction is on schedule for swimming in Summer 2020/2021.

The Pool excavation began earlier this month.  Today this milestone was celebrated with  Lane Cove Mayor Pam Palmer and Member for North Sydney Trent Zimmerman visiting the site. (see our cover photo).

“We are pleased to say construction of the new 50m pool is progressing well,” Mayor of Lane Cove Pam Palmer said today.

“Everything is on schedule for the pool to be open in time for the summer swimming season next year (2020/2021), which I know will be welcome news for many in our local community who are looking forward to once again enjoying an outdoor pool in Lane Cove.”

The New 50 M Outdoor Pool is Wider

The new pool features eight 50m lanes with a moveable boom enabling the pool to be converted into two 25m pools.

When complete, the new pool will be wider than the previous seven-lane pool and will be able to accommodate up to 10 lanes for school swimming carnivals.  One problem with holding swimming carnivals in Lane Cove has been the lack of parking.  By the time the Outdoor Pool is completed, The Canopy Carpark (aka Rosenthal Avenue Carpark) will be completed.  This means that Little Street Car Park will be available for swimming carnivals.

A moveable boom means the pool can also be used for Water Polo (this is good news for some parents of kids who play water polo.  Some parents currently drive to the Sutherland Shire to see two North Shore teams play against each other).

The project also includes on-deck showers, a new 800-seat covered grandstand, new changerooms and a youth centre with a half basketball court.

Background

The Lane Cove 50m Outdoor Pool was closed on Monday 17 December 2018 due to urgent safety concerns.  This closure was earlier than planed. A outdoor pool was to be redeveloped once Lane Cove Council had completed the Rosenthal Avenue Car Park Redevelopment.  A rapid decline in the pool’s concrete structure meant the pool was closed prior to the 2019 peak summer swimming season.

Lane Cove Pool Construction Costs

Lane Cove Councils received a grant of $2,000,000 from the Federal Government. The Member for North Sydney, Trent Zimmerman announced the grant in March, 2019. He was concerned the Pool was decommissioned and the community was without such an important community asset.  This funding means that both the Outdoor Pool and the Grandstand construction are being constructed concurrently.

Crystal Pools To Build the Pool

Crystal Pools Pty. Ltd  is constructing the new outdoor Pool. The construction cost is $3,862,970 (ex gst) plus any selected options.  This does not include the Grandstand construction costs.

History

The pool was opened in 1961.  A history of the pool can be found here
