Meet Lane Cove’s Very Own Marie Kondo!!

If you have been scrolling through the posts on ITC Lane Cove Chat you will have noticed there is decluttering happening all over Lane Cove.  You may be like ITC, working from home and wishing your desk and office did not look like a teenager’s bedroom (on a good day). If you are decluttering or like ITC need some motivation to declutter Lane Cove Local Pilar Llorente might inspire you.  Pilar one of only nine consultants in Australia officially trained and certified by Konmari Inc.

We asked Pilar why she decided to become a trained Marie Kondo consultant.  Take it away, Pilar…

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying

When I read the book “The life-changing magic of tidying” it was a WOW moment. I have always blamed others about the mess. First, my sister, then my husband and when my kids came along it was very easy to blame their toys and “stuff” to be the cause for the clutter in my house.  I grew up in a culture where we keep things just in case and letting things go is seen as an ungrateful act.  I quickly understood the problem wasn’t their stuff, the issue was my relationship with my possessions and all those preconceived ideas and taboos.

Why tidy?

Tidying is a powerful tool, but it’s not the destination. The real goal of tidying is to clear away the clutter so you can live the life you want.  When you reassess your belongings and organize your home, you set the stage for a vast transformation. This is the magic of tidying!

People think of Konmari consultants as this army that’s coming to your home to get rid of everything, but that’s not the case. I’m part of a movement. I stand for more clarity, calmness and happiness in the world.

Some of my clients haven’t succeeded before on their efforts to declutter, and that may be due to intermittent decluttering – donating old clothes every once in a while or cleaning out storage bins before a move. Still, these may result in brief moments of tranquillity. The clutter always comes back.

The Marie Kondo method is meant to be done just once, and you won’t rebound.

Follow the Category Order

·       Clothes

·       Books

·       Papers

·       Komono (miscellaneous items); and then

·       Sentimental Items

It makes sense to start with items where sentimental value is low, and it’s easier to let go, so when you are taking the critical decisions about sentimental items your joy filter will be on point. You will know straight away if an item is worth keeping with confidence.

Tidy by category, not by location. This will help you understand what you own; this gives clarity and helps to re-evaluate not just your buying habits but your storage area and how to use storage spaces in your home better.

Thank the items you’re letting go. Some people find the thanking-an-item part a bit funny, but it’s an essential part of the process. When we can recognize and appreciate the items that support our everyday life and when they are no longer being used on their intended purpose, it’s like closing the circle. Thinking deeply about each item you discard will impact how you live and acquire new things moving forward.

Finding the bigger picture and knowing you’re why. What’s your pain? What’s your goal? This is the energy that will get you through this process; there has to be a good reason to commit to this.

Last and my opinion probably the most important one is keeping only what sparks joy, don’t try to find a reason to keep or discard something. Let your heart do the choosing. When you tidy the Konmari way, you heighten your sensitivity to what sparks joy for you. This skill and mindset can change not just your physical space but your view of life.

Tidying is a significant reset – your real life begins after putting your house in order.
