Lane Cove News Week in Review 27th September to 3rd October 2020

It has been beautiful weather for the first week of the school holidays.  For the first time in 2020, you can notice that Lane Cove residents have gone away for the school holidays with plenty of parking available in all the local car parks.

Lane Cove 50m Outdoor Pool is Open

The Official opening ceremony for the Lane Cove Pool 50m Outdoor pool was held on Saturday 3rd October with special guest Ian Thorpe.  The Lane Cove Council has done a great job at upgrading the pool and the grandstand seats 800 people.  Find out more about the pool and how you can book a lane here.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes

On Friday Hazard Reduction Burning took place in Killara and on Friday night, and Saturday morning you could really smell the smoke.  Our cover photo was taken in Killara and showed the extent of the back burning.

Lane Cove Market Square

According to an article, in this week’s Australian Financial Review, Neighbourhood and sub-regional malls anchored by supermarkets and discount department stores have demonstrated their renowned resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The annual Shopping Centre news survey, which ranks the retail sales performance of shopping centres with between 6000 and 20,000 square metres of lettable retail space, shows that over the 12 months to July, about half reported improved performance on the prior year.

Lane Cove Market Square is second on the list below – it will be interesting to see how the figures change with the opening of The Canopy.

Lane Cove Council Plans to Redevelop Bob Campbell Oval

Lane Cove Council is planning to redevelop Bob Campbell Oval in Greenwich. A synthetic sports field will be constructed. The Greenwich Community Association has resolved to oppose the development works at BCO because it means the end, of the only significant piece of level green open space in Greenwich for active and passive recreation, off-leash dog walking and a plethora of family-friendly activities better conducted on grass than a synthetic field. As is the case at Blackman Park, dogs are not permitted on Synthetic Ovals. At Blackman Park, there are two other ovals which are not synthetic and are available for use by families and dog walkers.  Read more here.

Traffic Choas on River Road West

On Wednesday during peak hour, a truck ran into a power pole on River Road West between Longueville Road and William Edward Street.  The road was closed in both directions for about 90 minutes, creating traffic chaos in Austin Street and Longueville Road.

Liftgate Strikes Again

The lift at the interchange was playing up again, and on Friday night, NSW Fire and Rescue had to help people out of the lift.  We also heard some school children were stuck in the lift earlier this week.  RMS manages this lift, and we have written to them to ask them to upgrade the lift.

To add insult to injury, the lift for the overpass to the Canopy was also out of action this week.   The Lane Cove Council manages this lift.

Military Exercise at Burns Bay Reserve

This week there was an impressive display of military personal and water equipment as they conducted water exercises in Burns Bay.

Business Alert

Pacific Smiles Dental is now open in Lane Cove Market Square.  They are open 7 days a week.  Read more here.

On Monday the new Lane Cove Return and Earn was officially opened.  This facility is where you can take bottles and cans in exchange for cash. It is located at 67 Mars Road Lane Cove West Business Park. Brandon and Mason have opened the centre, and they are pictured below with our local member Anthony Roberts. The feedback so far is it is easy and quick to get your bottles recycled and be paid some cash. You can also have them pick up from your house. Find out more here.

Petition to Make Gore Hill Merge Safer

An ITC follower has launched a petition about the merger at Gore Hill.  The ITC follower told us the following:

“A few weeks ago I learned that I was not the only one who fears the merge onto the Gore Hill Freeway from Reserve Rd.

The one just before you go under the Pacific Hwy and hit Lane Cove.

Thanks for your input and support. Please sign this petition and share it with your friends so we can get our state pollies and bureaucrats to do the right thing and fix it.

Even if your friends don’t have Facebook, you can send them the link: http://chng.it/dMzpqncvPF

Signing takes about a minute and costs nothing.

Let’s get this done.”
