QR Codes Mandatory for Hospitality and Hairdressers – Check in Lane Cove

NSW Health mandated that from  Monday 23 November 2020, customer check-in at businesses were to be completed using electronic methods, e.g. a QR code.  Lane Cove Council developed its own QR system.  This system will no longer be able to be used at hospitality venues and hairdressers in Lane Cove.

From 1 January 2021, hospitality venues and hairdressers in NSW are required to change to the Service NSW QR code check-in system.

The change has been prompted by difficulties faced by NSW Health contact tracers attempting to retrieve contact information from private QR code registration systems used by businesses.

On 21st December 2020 Brad Hazzard, NSW Health Minister, said some check-in behaviour was concerning.  Mr Hazzard said:

“What we are finding is that some of the visitors to various venues still think that it’s funny to be putting in there that you are Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse or a false phone number. That must stop.

“This is a worldwide COVID pandemic. Thinking it’s smart to call yourself Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse is about as stupid as it gets.”

This could not happen with the Lane Cove check-in code as a text message had to be sent with a code to your phone (although it was not foolproof as numerous times ITC did not get a code sent to our phone).

Venues were also relying on customers to check-in themselves – NSW Health has said venues must see the green tick before a customer can enter.

What Do You Need to Do to Dine in Lane Cove?

You must have the Service NSW app on your phone.  You will probably already have it on your phone if you have an electronic drivers licence or needed to access service NSW for vouchers such as the active kids.
You will need the Service NSW app in the future as that will be how you will obtain your dining vouchers announced in the 2020 NSW budget.

I Don’t Have The Service NSW App.

Setting up an online Service NSW account is required before you can log into the Service NSW app on your phone.  To set up a Service NSW account, click here.

Follow the step by step process to set up an account. You will be sent a verification email.

Once you have created an account, you need to download the Service NSW app.

How Do You Use the App at the Venue?

The Venue should display a QR code on entry.  Just use your camera to hover over the QR code, and you will be taken to the app, and if the app is working, a green tick will appear.  Venues should not let you in unless they see the green tick.
