Glass Armours Exhibition Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studio

Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Studio has two new exhibitions which celebrate the Lunar New Year.

One of the exhibitions is Glass Armours by award-winning artist NC Qin.

Pride

Glass Armours explores the tension between the image we think we project and the reality of our experiences donning the armour of pride.

NC Qin shows how pride and wrath, are perceived in the Chinese culture and explores the defence/coping mechanisms that are commonly used, their effectiveness and how they relate to the overall human experience.

In her work, she often refers to Chinese cultural and historical values informed by Taoist philosophy and practice.

The exhibition shows objects that are ornamental and fragile rather than strong and solid, heavy and burdensome rather than functional and light.

NC Qin uses glass to create a phantom of ego we wrap around ourselves for protection, letting its translucency show its lack of substance and beauty to show how highly we elevate its importance.

The collection shows how historical and mythical references can be communicated by contemporary artwork.

Artist Background

NC Qin will tell you that she grew up in Sydney with a typical Asian family where her parents, like many others, wanted her to be one of the trio of career prestige: a lawyer, doctor or accountant.

But her heart was seized by passion. She could not see herself as anything else other than an artist. So strong was the pull to become one.

Her work is about how she sees and deals with her pride and ego; She explores the tension between the image we think we project and the reality of our experiences donning the armour of pride.

NC Qin is the winner of the National Emerging Art Glass Prize 2020

Adult Art Classes

Gallery Lane Cove provides the whole community with opportunities to attend art workshops and term classes in printmaking (including screen printing), sewing, jewellery making, knitting, life drawing, painting and pottery.  ITC is especially excited about going to pottery/ceramic classes (ITC became obsessed with pottery after watching the Great British Pottery Throwdown – like MasterChef for potters).
