Lane Cove News Week in Review 11th to 18th August 2021

Welcome to our week in review with up to date information on COVID19 as it impacts the Lane Cove Local Government Area.

COVID19 Lane Cove LGA Stats as of 8 pm  17th August 2021

Lane Cove has now recorded 10 cases in the last four weeks.

Set out below are details of the COVID19 cases recorded in our LGA, which includes all suburbs with a 2066 postcode and Greenwich. These stats do not include that part of Lane Cove North located in Willoughby City Council (for those who live on the Mowbray school side of Mowbray Road). This data is all COVID19 cases recorded for people living in the Lane Cove LGA of locally acquired cases in the last four weeks.
The data below shows the postcodes where the cases live and includes an overseas acquired case.

Late Last week, Giant Steps in Gladesville had to close due to a COVID19 outbreak. Autism Awareness Australia released the comment below. Giant Steps is an amazing school, and ITC has promoted some of their events. They have staff and students from all over the North Shore (including Lane Cove). Our thoughts go out to the parents, teachers and kids at Giant Steps.

COVID19 Press Conference  18 AUGUST 2021

NSW recorded 633 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8 pm last night.

Dr Chant stated that every COVID19 case is passing on the virus to more than one person.

There are currently 462 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, with 77 people in intensive care, 25 of whom require ventilation.

Of the 633 locally acquired cases reported to 8 pm last night, six are from the Northern Sydney local health district.

Ninety-four cases were in isolation throughout their infectious period, and 30 were in isolation for part of their infectious period. Sixty-two cases were infectious in the community, and the isolation status of 447 cases remains under investigation.

Of these locally acquired cases, 158 are linked to a known case or cluster – 145 are household contacts, and 13 are close contacts – and the source of infection for 475 cases is under investigation.

One new case was acquired overseas in the 24 hours to 8 pm last night. Seven previously reported cases have been excluded following further investigation and data reconciliation, bringing the total number of cases in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 14,854.

Sadly, NSW Health has been notified of the deaths of three people who had COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8 pm last night.

A man in his 60s from southwestern Sydney died at Liverpool Hospital. He was a patient in the geriatric ward at the hospital and is the ninth death linked to this outbreak.

Two men, both in their 70s and from western Sydney, died at Nepean Hospital.

NSW Health extends its deepest sympathies to their loved ones.

This brings the number of COVID-related deaths to 60 since 16 June 2021 and the number of lives lost to 116 since the beginning of the pandemic.

There have been 9,280 locally acquired cases reported since 16 June 2021, when the first case in this outbreak was reported.

NSW Health administered 36,175 COVID-19 vaccines in the 24 hours to 8 pm last night, including 9,279 at the vaccination centre at Sydney Olympic Park.

The total number of vaccines administered in NSW is now 5,353,364, with 1,932,738 doses administered by NSW Health to 8 pm last night and 3,420,626 administered by the GP network and other providers to 11:59 pm on Monday 16 August 2021.

If you are directed to get tested for COVID‑19 or self-isolate at any time, you must follow the rules whether or not the venue or exposure setting is listed on the NSW Health website.  Local testing info here.

It remains vital that anyone who has any symptoms or is close or casual contact with a person with COVID-19, isolates and is tested immediately. When testing clinics are busy, please ensure you stay in line, identify yourself to staff and tell them that you have symptoms or are a contact of a case.

Please check the NSW Government website regularly, and follow the relevant health advice if you have attended a venue of concern or travelled on a public transport route at the same time as a confirmed case of COVID-19. This list is being updated regularly as case investigations proceed.

Chaos at The Canopy

A roving reporter sent us our cover photo and told us on Friday 13th August:

“Chaos at the Canopy! This large excavation truck has been blocking the Rosenthal/Finlayson roundabout since 1pm, hindering traffic along both streets and in/out of the Canopy carpark. Delivery trucks from the Canopy loading bay frequently get stuck for a few minutes, but this is the worst one yet! It was coming down the hill from the plaza and has attempted to do a 180° turn to go back up the hill. Traffic is being forced to drive on the wrong side of the roundabout with multiple blind spots.”

Update from Service NSW

Some Good News for People who have not yet used their Dine and Discover vouchers the expiry date has now been extended to 30 July 2022.

The ServiceNSW app has been updated, so you can now stay logged in for up to 4 hours.

Emergency Message from 0444 444 444

On Thursday 12th August at around 2.00 pm, phones around the North Shore started receiving a text message about a missing man.  Many people thought it was a scam.  It was, in fact, an emergency alert sent out by NSW Police.

Emergency Alert is the national telephone warning system used by emergency services to send voice messages to landlines and text messages to mobile phones within a defined area about likely or actual emergencies.

Emergency Alert is just one way of warning communities and will not be used in all circumstances. Emergency Alert relies on telecommunications networks to send messages, and message delivery cannot be guaranteed.

There are a range of reasons why you may not receive a text message on your mobile phone, including your text message inbox was full or your mobile phone was switched off or not in coverage. More information is provided here.

NSW Rural Fire Service – Hazard Reduction Burning

Late last week, Hazard Reduction Burning was undertaken in the Northern Beaches Area, which resulted in smoke lingering around Lane Cove and the North Shore.  Further burning is scheduled for later this week, and you will probably smell smoke again over the weekend.

Let There Be Light at Blackman Park

Bright Spark Power joins the ‘Let There be Light!’ Blackman Park Lane Cove Campaign

The Lane Cove Cats are behind the push for better lights at Blackman Park lower Grass Fields. These lights have not been upgraded for over 40 plus years, and they are expensive to run and do not provide enough light for the bottom fields to be used during winter. The Lane Cove Cats hope that by raising money and working with Lane Cove Council, the lights at Blackman Park will be upgraded around the fields, the walking track and lights in the dog park.

The Blackman Park lights upgrade will allow more people to participate in local sport more often! The Lane Cove Cats need our help, and Bright Spark Power has stepped in to join the campaign – ‘Let there be Light!’.  Read more here.

Crime/Incident/Accident Report

A roving reporter told us:

“It’s important for unit blocks in the Lane Cove LGA to be aware of a break into our unit block at around 2.20 am on Friday morning the 30th of July. Within seconds the intruder managed to spring the door lock tongue out of the strike plate cavity and gain entry to a secure building.

I would also add that we observed a lone male pushbike rider ride around our public area, no doubt checking out our security barrier for perceived weaknesses. This occurred at 1.20 am on the same Friday morning.”

Cremorne

Police were called to a unit block in Spofforth Street around 8.30pm on 14 August regarding a violent altercation.  A 53-year-old man was arrested after it was alleged that he threatened a 44-year-old man with a knife before kicking and punching him.  The 53-year-old has been charged with Assault and Intimidation and is due to face Manly Court on 7 September.

Mosman

Police were patrolling in Glover Street around 1.00am on Sunday and stopped a silver Nissan for a random breath test.   The driver, a 30-year-old from Mosman, was arrested and taken to Chatswood Police station after failing a roadside breath test. The Mosman woman will face court in September for Mid Range PCA after a breath analysis produced a result of 0.117.

Lindfield

A Lindfield man has reported receiving a scam phone call from a man purporting to be from NBN.  The man spoke to the scammer for around 3 hours on 12 August, during which time the scammer stated that the man’s NBN network required an upgrade and requested personal information from the man.  An attempt was made to transfer $5000 from the man’s account but the transaction was frozen. A St Leonards woman received a similar scam call on 16 August with the caller claiming to be from Amazon.

Chatswood

A 16-year-old male was arrested on Friday evening following an incident in Crows Nest on Monday.  Police will allege that the young person attempted to steal alcohol from a bottle shop before being locked inside the store. The young male smashed the front door and left before Police arrived but was arrested on Friday after being identified in CCTV footage.  While in custody, the young person became incoherent and was aggressive towards ambulance officers and Police and had to be sedated and taken to hospital.  On release from the hospital, the male was refused bail and will face Children’s Court later this month.

Public Health Order Breaches:

Waverton

4 males,  aged in their early twenties,  from Naremburn, Carlton, Strathfield and Rockdale were infringed for meeting up in a park in Waverton and drinking together. The males told Police they were tired of being stuck at home and wanted to meet up.

Kirribilli

A 23-year-old Victorian man was arrested in Kirribilli on Monday evening.  North Shore Police were called to the location and spoke with the man, who was not able to provide a reasonable excuse for being in the area. The man was charged with Not Comply with Noticed Direction, refused bail and is due to appear in court this week.

Mosman

Police received a Crimestoppers report that a 44-year-old man from Glover Street had two visitors on 15 August.  All three people have been issued with infringement notices.

Wollstonecraft

Around 11pm on 10 August, Police stopped a vehicle on River Road after checks revealed it was registered to an address in Narwee.  The driver, an 18-year-old Narwee man and the passenger, an 18-year-old woman from Five Dock, had no reasonable excuse for being out and were issued with infringement notices.

Crows Nest

A man was issued with an infringement for not wearing a mask in a supermarket on 10 August.   The man told police he had an exemption but was not carrying evidence of the exemption, which is now a requirement under the Public Health Orders.

Willoughby

Investigations are continuing into an alleged assault and breach of the Public Health Orders that occurred in a home in Willoughby Road on Sunday evening around 7pm.  Police allege that around 8 people aged in their teens and early twenties had gathered at the home socialising and drinking when a fight broke out. A 20-year-old male stumbled out of the home and asked for assistance from a passerby before being taken to the hospital with cuts and abrasions.

Mosman

A 55-year-old Northern Beaches man was infringed at Balmoral Beach on Saturday 14 August when he was observed by Police to be operating a barbecue at a restaurant, serving customers and not wearing a face mask.

Chatswood

A man was infringed when he was observed entering the retail shop in a petrol station without wearing a mask or checking in with the QR code.  Further checks by Police revealed that the man had an outstanding warrant and was also allegedly in possession of a small amount of cannabis.   The man was arrested and taken to Chatswood Police Station and will face Hornsby Court on 6 October.

Cammeray

Police stopped a vehicle on Palmer Street around 4 am on 13 August when they observed two people on board.  A 45-year-old and a 37-year-old, both from Minto, were issued with infringement notices when they were found to be carpooling on their way home from work.
