Lane Cove News Week in Review 27th July to 3rd August 2022

Welcome to our Lane Cove News week in review.

Kylea Tink – First Speech in Parliament

This week our new local federal member was busy in Canberra.  This is how she described her first week:

“From being sworn in to delivering my first parliamentary speech, what a week it has been!

On Tuesday, I was officially sworn in as a member of parliament alongside my fellow Independents Allegra Spender, Kate Chaney, Dr Sophie Scamps, Dai Le, Dr Monique Ryan, Zoe Daniel and Zali Steggall. I could not be prouder to be counted among this formidable group of women as part of an extraordinary and history-making crossbench.

Then on Wednesday, I had the incredible honour of addressing the 47th Parliament of Australia in my first speech as your federal representative. It was a surreal experience, being able to share my story and to describe North Sydney in our own terms.

Our community is vibrant and diverse. Ambitious and compassionate. We value reason, consensus and integrity. And we will use our voice and our vote to help build a better Australia with the changes we want to see.

You can watch a video of my first speech here. Thank you to all who travelled to Canberra to support me and to all who watched from afar. North Sydney, I am forever grateful for your support, and I won’t let you down.”

Changing the Name of the North Sydney Federal Electorate

The Daily Telegraph reported that Kylea Tink is making a case to change the name of the North Sydney electorate after the traditional owners of the region – but the Hunters Hill mayor has questioned the merits of the proposal.  You can read the article here (it is paywalled).

New Light System Installed in Lane Cove Market Square Car Park

After years of malfunctioning signs, a sensor system (that seems to work) has now been installed in the Lane Cove Market Square Car Park.  The sign used to say full all the time.  This expenditure had been in the Lane Cove Council’s Budget for a few years.  Our Cover Photo shows the new system, and below are the sensors installed in each car parking spot.

Moore Street Gates Are Back

The following was posted on Mayor Andrew Zbik’s Twitter Account.

When we posted the above picture on our Facebook page the following comments were posted:

“Great news, will stop people speeding up/down Barwon road in the exact hours kids are going to school. The amount of close calls I’ve seen on my way to work is insane. Real question is whether LCC employees will actually keep the gates closed during those stated hours, which has frequently not been the case.”

“They’re nice and freshly painted too.”

New Business Alert

Roving Reporter Clare Grey posted the following on Lane Cove Chat by ITC

“Big news for Lane Cove North – Del Piero’s is finally open!! (The old Geo Pizza on Mowbray Rd next to the bottle shop).

Pizza, pasta & gelato

Can report the gelato is good!!!”

Lane Cove Events

Community Engagement Sessions – Trees on Private Land.

On Saturday 6th August Lane Cove Council would like to speak to you about trees on private land and here your views.  They will be in the Lane Cove Plaza and at Kingsford Smith Oval.

These initial drop-in stalls are part of a grant-funded project which aim to identify any barriers or negative perceptions residents may have for trees on private land.

By identifying these issues, Council will gain the necessary tools to develop localised materials for urban heat mitigation and alleviate concerns of some residents.

The first stall is planned for 6 August in two locations and aims to collect data from locals related to trees on private land. It is an interactive process including visual presentation tools aimed to target those who may not always participate in traditional formats such as our surveys.

Details here.

Is Your Watercraft Missing from a Foreshore Area?

Watercraft Registration for a Dinghy, Canoe, Kayak, and Stand up Paddleboard

Watercraft numbers are increasing across the Local Government Area and sometimes stored in sensitive bushland areas or other inappropriate locations.

Watercraft, including dinghies, kayaks, SUPs, etc., that are stored along any of the Council’s public foreshore areas needed to be registered with the Council by 31 March 2022 (this date had been extended from 31 December 2021 due to COVID restrictions).

Council has now started removing abandoned watercraft from our foreshore and bushland areas.

If you require further assistance or are concerned that your watercraft has been removed, please call Council’s Open Space and Urban Services team on 9911 3555.

How to register your watercraft

Owners must complete a Watercraft Tag Application Form and email it to [email protected].

Registration is free.

A watercraft tag will then be issued and must be displayed on the watercraft.

Have Your Say – Draft Sustainability Action Plan 2022-2025

The consultation closes Sunday, 7 August 2022

Since 2005, Council has made great progress in incorporating sustainability goals specified in the Sustainable Action Plans and turning them into actions. The original Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) Think Global Act Local 2005-2015 was endorsed by Council in 2005 and was the strategy behind the community adoption of the Sustainability Levy in 2007. The Levy was introduced with the community’s support to fast track actions identified within the SAP.

With the current Sustainability Action Plan expiring, Council conducted a community-wide survey in late 2021/early 2022 to identify the community’s sustainability values and to obtain insights on critical issues, gaps, challenges, needs and opportunities regarding sustainability and the environment in Lane Cove. The feedback was used to shape the draft actions addressing the natural and built environment, community engagement, economic sustainability, energy, society, sustainable transport and water in the Draft Sustainability Action Plan 2022 – 2025.

The Draft Sustainability Action Plan, 2022-2025, is now available for public review and feedback.

The Draft Sustainability Action Plan, 2022-2025, has three key themes; Livability, Community and Environment, which reflect the Council’s quadruple bottom line approach ensuring all decisions consider a balance of economic, environmental, social and governance to enhance the quality of life in Lane Cove. Each theme has 12 goals, and each goal has up to 18 strategic actions resulting in more than 100 strategic actions to create a more sustainable Lane Cove that is able to be resilient in the face of future challenges.

This Draft Sustainability Action Plan provides Council with a robust framework to continue pursuing excellence in sustainability.
