Lane Cove News Week in Review 24th to 31st August 2022

Welcome to our Lane Cove News week in review.

Pedestrian Hit on Rosenthal Lane Near The Cake Man

The following was posted on Lane Cove Chat by ITC on 28th August 2022.

“My brother-in-law was crossing the shared road after exiting the Cake Man arcade when a speeding car ran over his foot and hit his hip. The car did not stop. If we can’t have traffic hazards in this area (and I don’t know why not), could we install CCTV cameras to catch motorists who drive dangerously along this road?”

ITC spoke to local business owners at the Arcade, and they said they were not aware of any other incidents where a pedestrian was hit but do get concerned about the number of children who run out of the arcade into the street.

A new warning sign has been erected (see our cover photo). This replaces a sign that was installed a few months ago.

North Sydney Independents Launch

The push to get more community independents into parliament at the March New South Wales State election has started.

The organisation behind Kylea Tink’s successful campaign for federal parliament is looking for a candidate to contest the Lane Cove electorate in the state election next March.

The search began at a public meeting in the Crows Nest Hotel on Sunday, August 28, where NSI announced its plans for Lane Cove in front of over 120 supporters and media.

North Sydney Independents (NSI) are appealing to voters in the Lane Cove electorate to suggest a candidate who reflects community interests and promotes integrity and principles over party politics.

The co-founder of NSI, Kristen Lock, says the Lane Cove campaign will be based on the model that was so successful in this year’s Federal Election.

She says positive campaigning with a focus on integrity, pro-active and two-way communication with communities, and the issues that matter to the Lane Cove community will be the key.

“The search for a candidate who embodies those principles has now begun,” Kristen says, “and we hope to have someone selected by November.”

Crime Incident and Accident Report

Our friends at Mosman Collective have reported the following:

POLICE BEAT: WARNING FOR TOYOTA PRIUS OWNERS.

Residents are being warned that brazen thieves are targeting catalytic converters in older model Hybrid vehicles.

A catalytic converter is a toaster-sized device that scrubs exhaust emissions sends through a honeycomb of rare metals, like platinum and palladium.

Prices for these rare metals have reached record highs this year, leading to a black market in the devices.

North Shore Police Area Command tell Mosman Collective they are investigating FIVE catalytic converter thefts in the past month.

“We are continuing our enquiries into incidents at Artarmon, Roseville, Neutral Bay, Cammeray and Lindfield,” a spokesperson said.

Offenders are likely using hire vehicles as a method of transport and may be travelling between the Central Coast and Sydney.

“Thieves use a grinder to remove the device from underneath the vehicle and it takes just a few minutes,” we were told.

If you can’t park your Hybrid in a garage, your best bet is to install a dash cam and encourage your neighbours to do the same.

If you have friends in Mosman, Neutral Bay – get them to follow Mosman Collective.

Drive While Suspended – Longueville

Police have charged a Longueville man for the third time this year for driving while his licence is suspended.

At about 12:30 am Tuesday, 16th August, police patrolled along Longueville Road, Lane Cove, when they observed a black Volkswagen turn onto Birdwood Avenue. Checks revealed the vehicle belonged to the Longueville man.

Police stopped the vehicle and allege the Longueville man was behind the wheel. When speaking with the male police will further allege that he stated he knew his licence was suspended. The man was charged and will return to court in September.

Police Operation – Chatswood

A few roving reporters saw about eight police cars near The Great Northern last night – the NSW Police Media Unit advised the following:

About 7.30 pm (Sunday 29 August 2022), North Shore Police Area Command officers were called to Mowbray Road West, Lane Cove North, following reports of a physical altercation.

A 16-year-old girl was located at the scene. NSW Ambulance paramedics assessed her; however, the girl was uninjured.

Police conducted a canvass of the area; however, no one was located. Inquiries into the incident continue.
