Welcome to our week in review.

Australia Day 26th January 2023

Australia Day started with 65 locals becoming Australian Citizens.  The ceremony was held in The Canopy.

Uncle Terry from Tribal Warrior commenced proceedings with a special smoking ceremony, which was then followed by official remarks from Mayor of Lane Cove, Clr Andrew Zbik, Australia Day Ambassador, Mary-Ruth Mendel, Federal Member for North Sydney, Kylea Tink, State Member for Lane Cove, Hon. Anthony Roberts MP, Clr David Roenfeldt and Rotarian, Lalitha Warren.

Each new citizen each took home a native seedling from Lane Cove’s Community Nursery and a native plum cupcake.

Lane Cove Rotary then held a BBQ with face painting and entertainment in the Lane Cove Plaza.

On Friday night James Blundell and his son played in The Canopy.

No Australia Day Honours for Lane Cove Residents

Usually, we would announce some Lane Cove/Greenwich locals who received an Australia Day Honour – there were no Lane Cove/Greenwich locals this year. There are so many residents in our area that devote their time to worthwhile charities and causes who deserve recognition.  Why not nominate them?

HOW DO YOU NOMINATE SOMEONE FOR AN ORDER OF AUSTRALIA?

The Order of Australia recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement.

Anyone can nominate any Australian for an award in the Order of Australia. If you know someone worthy, nominate them now at gg.gov.au.

The Order of Australia also has a Military Division. Awards in the Military Division are recommended to the Governor-General by the Minister for Defence.

There are four levels of award:

AC: Companion of the Order of Australia, for eminent achievement and merit of the highest degree in service to Australia or to humanity at large

AO: Officer of the Order of Australia, for distinguished service of a high degree to Australia or to humanity at large

AM: Member of the Order of Australia, for service in a particular locality or field of activity, or to a particular group

OAM: Medal of the Order of Australia, for service worthy of particular recognition

Soft Plastic Recycling Thornleigh CRC

As many of you know there are very few places that now accept soft plastics for recycling. The Community Recycling Centre at Hornsby were taking soft plastics but they have become overwhelmed with the drop offs so now you can only drop off soft plastics if you live in the Hornsby Council Area – they released the following statement:

Users of Hornsby Shire Council’s Community Recycling Centre (CRC) at Thornleigh will need to demonstrate they reside in the Local Government Area (LGA) as the Council works to manage local processing in the wake of the collapse of soft plastics collection company, Red Cycle.

Council says residents will be required to show a copy of their NSW driver licence or rates notice in order to recycle soft plastics, hard plastics and Styrofoam at the Thornleigh facility.

The new rule follows the November 2022 closure of Red Cycle, which previously collected soft plastics from Coles and Woolworths.

Residents will also be subject to a weekly limit of one normal shopping bag full of soft plastics (40cmx40cm bag) per week.

“With the close of this service, councils and residents across Sydney are struggling to find alternative collection services for their soft plastics as they try to maintain their recycling practices,” Council said in a statement.

“Due to the scarcity of alternative collection systems in Sydney, Council’s CRC, which has a viable soft plastics recycling service, has faced an unprecedented spike in users of the facility.”

Council says the quantity of soft plastics has more than doubled since November last year and, based on the increasing trend, it is estimated the CRC facility will accept around 50-80 tonnes of soft plastic material over the next 12 months.

“Council has established a strong partnership with Plasmar, a plastics recycling specialist, which sorts soft plastics, pelletises them and then makes a broad range of products including posts, boards, sleepers, bollards, wheel stops and other construction materials,” it said in a statement.
