Cult Classic Musical to Heat Up Lane Cove this Autumn

This May, audiences will be transported by Lane Cove Theatre Company  to an imagined historical “revusical” exploring the shady side of the American dream.

A multiple Tony Award-winning theatrical tour-de-force, Assassins combines Sondheim’s signature blend of intelligently stunning lyrics and beautiful music with a panoramic story of the culture of celebrity and the violent means some will use to obtain it, embodied by America’s four successful and five would-be presidential assassins.

Bold, original, disturbing and alarmingly funny, Assassins is one of the most controversial musicals ever written.

This is perhaps one of the most brilliantly constructed, controversial and yet darkly humorous theatrical pieces ever written. In a fairground shooting gallery a group of misfits gather. Each has a problem they need to solve and each has discovered the answer – they must shoot the President of the United States!

From John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, we learn of the many varied and unusual ways that each has committed (or attempted to commit) the ultimate crime; their motivations and their desire to be recognsed for their actions in a world where they are largely dismissed and ignored.

Assassins is a chilling, and timely, reminder that those in power ignore the poor and disenfranchised to their peril.

Adam Feldman, Time Out: “Sondheim’s score is dazzlingly witty and well-crafted, matching period musical styles (from 19th-century ballads and Sousa marches to tarantella and 1970s singer-songwriter pop) with lyrics that slash through them.”

Variety: “The bigger, painfully timely question posed …is: Are we now so jaded … that this modern classic has lost some of its shock value after 30 years? And the answer is: Nope. content and … presentation, “Assassins” is still a killer show.”
