Lane Cove Local Adelaide Kennedy Stars as a Climate Activist in Black Sun/Blood Moon

Lane Cove local Adelaide Kennedy is currently playing the role of Maddy in Black Sun/Blood Moon by writer/director Chris Bendall.  The play has already been staged in Cairns, Toowoomba and Griffiths and will soon be seen in Sale, Warnambool and Western Australia.  It’s playing in Sydney at the Chatswood Concourse on 2 – 3 June 2023 and the Riverside Theatre Paramatta on 7 – 8 June 2023.

This play is part of Chatswood Culture Bites 2023, Willoughby City Council’s program of music, theatre, comedy and more in the Chatswood Central Business District.

This not-to-be-missed Australian production for teens and families is a beautiful new adventure play inspired by the Fridays for Future student-led protests that took the country by storm in 2019.

Black Sun/Blood Moonis a fantastical story about finding your voice and saving the world.

Two intertwining stories – one magical, the other all too real – bring two unlikely heroes to the stage. Black Sun/Blood Moon follows Maddy, a ten-year-old climate champion, and Katie, the underachieving assistant of a climate-denying politician, as they set out to save the planet.

When Paul unwittingly inspires his young daughter Maddy to take part in a school climate strike, their lives are turned upside down irrevocably. Maddy’s journey will put her at increasing risk as she takes her message to the powers that be, while Katie will find herself on the back of eagles and dolphins as she attempts to fulfil a fantastical quest from the future.

Featuring stunning video and projection, and amazing life-size puppetry by Erth Visual and Physical, Black Sun/Blood Moon will delight families with young people 12 years and older.

We asked Adelaide Kennedy to tell us a little bit about herself and why she likes acting.  Take it away Adelaide….

My name is Adelaide Kennedy, I’m 15 years old and in year 10 at Marist Sisters’ College Woolwich. I love drama, public speaking, and reading.

Tell us About Your Role in Black Sun/Blood Moon

In Black Sun/Blood Moon  I play a young climate activist called Maddy. She’s very passionate and hopeful, and she’s constantly looking for new ways to make the world better which doesn’t always match up with the ideas of the adults around her.

Why Did You Audition For The Role Of Maddy?

I was very excited to audition for this role because the opportunity to be involved in a play as magical and inspiring as Black Sun/Blood Moon doesn’t come along often. I love acting on screen, but nothing compares to live theatre.

What Character Traits Do You Share with Maddy?

I would say that persistence is a trait that Maddy and I share. We both keep trying; even if we get knocked down, we always brush ourselves off and keep on going.

How Do You Keep Up with Your School Work When You Are Performing Interstate?

While touring I have online tutors and I receive all my school work online, COVID taught us how that can work. I complete my school work on days when I’m not working or during breaks. My teachers are very supportive and help me by sending me work and extra videos to help me study.

Tell us About Your Past Roles

I have been a student at The Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP ) for almost 9 years with regular performances and I had a role in the ATYP production “Charlie Pilgrim – A beginners guide to time travel” at The Griffin ‘Stables Theatre’.

Most of my acting work has been on screen in shows such as Mr Inbetween (Foxtel), Hard Ball (ABC), How To Do Stuff Good (ABC), and Know It Alls (ABC).

Has A Local Teacher Inspired You?

During primary school at St. Michael’s Lane Cove my year 4 teacher Miss Hansen was very passionate about drama and was very fun and encouraging. She always pushed me to follow my passions and pursue theatre.

My current drama teacher, Miss George, is such an inspiration to me also. She is so supportive of me taking time off school and always makes sure I have all the resources I need.

What’s Your Favourite Thing To Do in Lane Cove?

Personally, I love going for bush walks around Lane Cove. I adore ‘Gore Creek Reserve’ and ‘Ventemans Reach’ in Blackman Park. I do love the Canopy, the music concerts are so much fun and the restaurants around there are amazing.
