18 Year Old Lane Cove Man Charged In Relation To Pacific Highway Crows Nest Crash

    18-year-old Lane Cove man Vansh Khanna has been granted bail after being charged with seven offences over allegedly hitting involving three teenage boys pedestrians at the Falcon and Pacific Highway Crows Nest Intersection. He will be back in court on 8 June 2023 for a mention.

    During the Bail proceedings, his solicitor mentioned he was an UBER Driver.  A spokesperson for UBER confirmed to ITC that Vanahs Khanna was an UBER Eats Driver and that they had sighted all the relevant paperwork to ensure he could legally drive in New South Wales.  Vansh Khanna is a student at Macquarie University and has been only been living in Sydney for three months.  A person is permitted to be an UBER Eats Driver at aged 18 but an UBER driver must be over 21.

    The International Drivers Licence Regulations will change on 1 July 2023.  Drivers from countries which include India and China on a visa will be required to sit a NSW driver’s licence exam if they are in the country for more than six months – regulations here.

    Background

    At about 3.30 pm on Thursday, 18 May 2023, emergency services responded to reports that three North Sydney Boys High students had been struck by a car at the intersection of Falcon Street and the Pacific Highway, Crows Nest, as they were allegedly crossing the roadway whilst facing a green pedestrian signal.

    NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the boys – one aged 13 and two aged 12 – at the scene.

    The 13-year-old boy was taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital and treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The two 12-year-old boys sustained minor injuries and were conveyed to Westmead Children’s Hospital. All boys have now been released from hospital.

    Officers from North Shore Police Area Command secured a crime scene that was later examined by police from the Crash Investigation Unit.

    Police were informed that after the crash the vehicle drove from the scene where the driver allegedly failed to stop or render assistance.  A roving reporter told us that police were stopping all cars travelling along the Pacific Highway and searching them shortly after the accident.

     

    Shortly before 4pm, police attended a house in Riverview, where the alleged driver –Vansh Khanna was arrested and taken to Chatswood Police Station.

    He was charged with seven offences, including:

    • Dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – dive manner dangerous
    • Negligent driving (occasion grievous bodily harm) – 1st offence
    • Cause bodily harm by misconduct, in charge of motor vehicle (x2)
    • Fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing grievous bodily harm
    • Fail to stop and assist after impact cause injury – 1st offence
    • Proceed through red traffic light (not toll booth)

    Police also issued the man a licence suspension notice.

    Police were at the Riverview home from 4 pm and were taking photos of the vehicle allegedly involved in the accident.  After taking photographs of the vehicle, a Honda Accord was seized by police efor mechanical and forensic examination.
