Fire and Rescue NSW Untangle a Magpie

On Monday night, a magpie was caught in twine and stranded in a tree on Longueville Road.  Fire and Rescue, NSW Lane Cove crew, came out to rescue the magpie, but their ladder was not long enough.  The next morning, the crew from Crows Nest (who have a Bronto truck) came out to rescue the Magpie.  A local wildlife rescuer told ITC:

“There is an ongoing issue with birds being entangled in twine in Lane Cove (and everywhere).”

Update on 266 Longueville Road

The Sydney North Planning Panel approved a section 4.55 Modification allowing the Pathways group to remove the aged care component from the 266 Longueville Road Development.

Locals who spoke at the SNPP public hearing argued the removal of the aged care component from the development meant that the development was now an upmarket residential facility for those over 55 and did not address the need for aged care beds in Lane Cove.

Original Development Consent

Construction of a seniors housing development comprising 70-bed residential aged care facility, 82 independent living units/self-contained dwellings, with basement car parking for 122 vehicles, new public park and facilities and landscaped through-site link.

New Modified Development Consent

Construction of seniors housing development comprising 92 independent living units, basement car parking for 181 vehicles, new public park and facilities and landscaped through-site link.

Pathways occupy 266 Longueville Road pursuant to a 99-year lease from Lane Cove Council.  The Lease specifically notes that the development must be in accordance with the design requirements.  The design requirements are set out in the Lease and include both ILUs and aged care.  The Lease will need to be amended, and this amendment will need to be approved by the council at a council meeting.

The Lane Cove Council resolved to build senior’s living to assist with the need for aged care in Lane Cove.  Since this decision, there has been numerous aged care and retirement villages planned for Lane Cove.

At the Lane Cove Council 16th August 2021 Meeting, the councillors discussed the NSW Housing SEPP Consultation.  The Officer’s Report set out in the Agenda Papers noted the following:

Concentration of Seniors Housing

It is still considered that there should be a concentration threshold for the provision of age care development under the seniors SEPP, so that once a certain concentration of developments has been reached within a set area e.g. 2 square km, the SEPP should no longer apply. This is because the SEPP is sometimes used in order to access the concessions granted and areas can ultimately end up with an oversupply of seniors housing, placing demands on services and unintended, out-of-character built form outcomes.

The councillors discussed this issue in detail and decided the above threshold would be too hard to enforce.  During the debate, Council staff were asked for their opinion on the need for senior housing in Lane Cove in light of Lane Cove’s social plan.  The council officer stated:

“not delivered much for aged care concept.”

“..missing aged care to keep seniors in Lane Cove.”

Mayor Pam Palmer stated: “..do need some more nursing homes ..keep encouraging more facilities for elderly.”

The General Manager stated ” 266 came to be needed for aged care ..higher priority for aged care than over 55.

The Lane Cove Boot Sale Hailed a Success

On Sunday, 30th July 2023, Lane Cove Council and Lane Cove Rotary organised a car boot sale and encouraged residents to sell and buy some pre-loved goods.  Lane Cove Rotary organised the event well; one seller said it was great to see their garage was less cluttered.  Car Boot Sales will be held every three to four months.

New 40km/hr Zones at Royal North Shore Hospital

If you visit the Royal North Shore Hospital or North Shore Private, be aware that there are now 40km/h zones.

A new 40km/h High Pedestrian Activity Area (HPAA) to manage speed and put pedestrian safety first is now in place in and around the Royal North Shore Hospital precinct, St Leonards.

The precinct comprises public roads surrounding the hospital including Herbert Street, Frederick Street, Reserve Road and Westbourne Street, as well as the private roads within Royal North Shore Hospital grounds.

Traffic changes, developed in accordance with Transport for NSW “High Pedestrian Activity Areas” guidelines, include gateways, traffic calming devices, and a new pedestrian crossing facility.

The HPAA 40km/h speed zones will be put in place on the following roads:

  • Herbert Street (between Pacific Highway and just north of Frederick Street);
  • Frederick Street (between Herbert Street and 2 Frederick Street);
  • Reserve Road (from Pacific Highway to the Hospital ground);
  • Westbourne Street (from Pacific Highway to the hospital ground); and
  • All private roads within the RNSH grounds.

Willoughby City Mayor Tanya Taylor said that the traffic changes within the precinct are a welcome shift to endorse pedestrian safety.

“The precinct is a busy hub of activity generating significant pedestrian movement from the Transport Interchange, Royal North Shore Hospital, adjacent residential blocks, Gore Hill Oval and St Leonards TAFE NSW.”

“The changes will alert drivers to the lower speed limit and make them aware of the presence of pedestrians,” Cr Taylor said.

Jump Start into Spring with Eden Gardens

Sydney’s spring may officially start on September 1, but a quick look around the neighbourhood in August and the flowers will tell a different story.
According to Tim Entwisle, famous author, broadcaster and former Director of both Sydney and Melbourne’s Botanic Gardens, we should have a new season ‘sprinter’ to cover ‘peak flowering’ on the southeast coast of Australia, when our wattles and blossoms are out. In his book Sprinter and Sprummer, botanist Tim Entwisle argues the case for a five-season calendar that more closely reflects antipodean cycles in weather, and plant and animal activity.

Here at Eden Gardens we are sprinting all right, and busily preparing our gardens and nursery for the season ahead. If you’re not running in the City to Surf, we thought you might want to join us for the Jump Start on Spring too!

Join us on Sunday 13th of August to celebrate the start of the new season by attending our vibrant artisan market. Our markets bring together talented artists, craftsmen, and local vendors and a good excuse to wonder through the gardens and welcome in warmer days ☀️
