We asked ITC readers to tell us about a Lane Cove local who would be interesting to interview. One local told us about Lane Cove Local Greg Moran.
Greg Moran is a multi-award-winning Writer, Director, Producer and Comedian.
Greg shares his journey with great humour and humility and shows that a disability is not an impediment to living a happy, productive and fulfilling life.
Greg broke his neck playing Rugby at St Ignatius College in 1983 at the age of 15, becoming a C3/4 quadriplegic, meaning he had little movement or sensation below his shoulders. He spent five months in Royal North Shore Hospital before returning to school in an electric wheelchair to complete his HSC.
Greg then went to Sydney University, where he completed his Arts degree in English and Fine Arts.
After completing his degree, Greg made his first short film in 1998. Since then, Greg has written, directed and produced five short films.
From 2010 to 2013 Greg helped develop and produce 130 episodes of the children’s television game show Spit It Out with Channel 7 and Tumble TV.
Greg founded Left Field Productions and works as a freelance writer, director and producer.
We asked Greg the following questions.
Why Did You Decide to Set Up Your Own Production Company?
I set up my own production company because it can often be difficult to find a producer, so I decided to produce my own projects as well as others.
We have released five short films, although two of them were coproductions, one with the Human Rights Commission and the other one with Hearts In Rugby Union.
The majority of my projects I have written and directed myself. The others I was just asked if I was interested, and I thought they were compelling projects with stories worth telling.
I’m currently back at uni doing my masters in producing at the Australian film, television and radio School (AFTRS).
I’m producing several short films and documentaries there as part of the course.
I have a few other projects that are in Development. The main thing for me is trying to tell compelling stories that have an impact and hopefully make a difference.
Have You Filmed Around Lane Cove?
Yes, I have filmed in numerous locations around Lane Cove.
Part of my first two short films, ‘Begging for It’ and ‘Back talk’ were filmed at Yorks Corner on Tambourine Bay Road and in my Lane Cove home.
My 2021 short film ‘Culicidae’ was filmed entirely at my home in Lane Cove and my 2022 short film, ‘White Lies’ was shot at St Ignatius College, Riverview and in my home in Lane Cove.
How Long Have You Lived In Lane Cove?
I first came to Lane Cove from Canberra as a border at St Ignatius College in 1980. After breaking my neck playing rugby there in 1983, I moved into my current home in Lane Cove in around 1985.
What Do You Like About Living in Lane Cove?
I think Lane Cove is a great suburb.
It’s very central to the city and other areas it’s very green and has a good local shopping centre, great parks, and reserves.
The Canopy is also a great addition with all it offers. Very family, friendly suburb that’s obviously populated with great people.
What Improvements Would You Like to See in the Lane Cove Council Area?
Most of the street-level shops at Lane Cove shopping centre are now accessible, but they’re still a few with steps at the entrance to some, which make it difficult if you’re in a wheelchair. So more access to these would be handy.
Any uneven footpaths are also very challenging for wheelchairs, so there is always work to be done there, even though it has gotten a lot better.
What’s Your Favourite Thing To Do in Lane Cove?
Go out to lunch or dinner or take the dog for a walk in the park.
