Lane Cove Local Kimberly Hetherington Delightful Children’s Book Fairy Among the Ants

Kimberly Hetherington is a Canadian art therapist and writer living in Lane Cove. She is the author of a children’s Book, Fairy Among the Ants.

We asked Kimberly the following questions:

What is Fairy Among the Ants About?

It’s a children’s Book about self-discovery, self-acceptance and belonging. It’s ideal for children six years old and up who are figuring out who they are and where they fit in. Especially children who have moved around the world like I did.

How Long Did It Take You to Write Fairy Among The Ants?

It didn’t take me very long (not as long as the publishing!). I created the story from an art therapy exercise that uses a difficult time in our past and reframes it as a hero’s journey. The process of publishing took me close to 3 years. I got published through Austin Macauley, which is a UK-based publishing company.

What Was the Most Difficult Thing About Writing the Book?

The most challenging thing was editing and getting the illustrations right. I had a particular image in mind and found it hard to get used to a different vision than I imagined.

Is this Your First Book?

I have previously written and self-published another children’s Book called Lady Autumn.

It’s about the creature responsible for changing the colour of the leaves every autumn.

I have plans to write many more. At the moment, I’m thinking of doing a series of short stories. Once my children get older, I look forward to hearing what their imaginations come up with. I will create stories based on their interests and ideas. At some point, I would also like to publish a memoir.

What Inspires You?

Everything! I love that any fun idea you have can be turned into something. It’s so freeing to be led by your imagination and see where it takes you.

Is there a Lane Cove Connection to the Book?

No, but the fairy of the story lives in a kapok tree like those all over Sydney and in the Lane Cove National Park!

How Long Have You Lived in Lane Cove?

I moved to Lane Cove in May and love it here – the best place in the world to raise a family!

What’s Your Favourite Thing to Do in Lane Cove?

We have two favourite things: going to The Canopy and wandering around outside enjoying nature. We personally love Stringy Bark Reserve and Tamborine Bay Park.

What’s your favourite Lane Cove coffee shop?

Our favourite café is Lamin8 Patisserie. My husband is from France, and he reckons they have the best croissants in Lane Cove!
