Emily Charlotte from LCTC’s Little Mermaid is Starring in a Feature Film

Lane Cove Theatre Company provides opportunities for young local talent.  Their annual family musical is always sold out.

Last year 15-year-old Emily Charlotte played the role of Aquata in The Little Mermaid.

Emily was well suited to the role as she had honed her skills with singing lessons at the Lane Cove Music and Cultural Centre, which also assisted her in preparing for her audition (which included having to sing and present a monologue).  Emily told ITC that although she lives in Willoughby, Lane Cove’s performing art schools are amazing and have always been her go-to!  Both Emily’s parents work in Lane Cove.

Emily said that after months of pre-production, she now has a hole in her heart that was once filled with endless The Little Mermaid rehearsals, pre-show chants and laughs, mid-show rush, and post-show excitement. She did nine shows in total over three weeks.

Emily said she is so grateful to The Little Mermaid family, who made it so fun. Her favourite part (other than performing) was when kids would come up to the mermaids after the show and ask what it’s like being a mermaid and where her tiara was from. She felt like a Disneyland princess.

Emily has trained with NIDA, Young Actors Assembly, ATYP, AFTRS, The Australian Shakespeare Company, Masterclass, Screenwise, Sydney Acting Studio, and more. As of this last term, she is now studying at The Australian Performing Arts Grammar School after being a Willoughby Girls High Student.

Screen Debut

Her next role is set to captivate audiences with her debut mystery short film, titled ‘Un(known) Number’. The film, directed by Suvipra Vaiya and produced by the Young Actors Assembly (“YAA“), promises to be a thrilling cinematic experience, delving into the complex themes of grief and intricate teen relationships, that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.

The entire cast and crew, particularly those belonging to the Young Actors Assembly, have spent the last year raising funds, writing drafts, and working tirelessly to bring this project to life.

This compelling film marks Emily’s screen debut. She will play the leading role of Estelle. The entire young cast’s performances are a testament to their ability, potential and voice, offering a poignant depiction of teens grappling with the complexities of grief and the danger of secrets.

‘Un(known) Number’ follows the story of 8 teenagers, solving the mystery of an anonymous pin-drop location, providing evidence of who killed their classmate Jules. Each of the characters represents one of the 7 stages of grief, while the film explores topics of LGBTQ, friendship dynamics, heartache… and who doesn’t love a good murder mystery?

With its suspenseful twists, the film showcases the talent and versatility of Emily as an actress. ‘Un(known) Number’ will stand out as a film that pushes the envelope of the traditional mystery genre. It intricately dissects the journey of its multiple protagonists, navigating the labyrinth of grief in losing their mutual friend and their own complicated relationships, shedding light on the tumultuous emotional landscape of adolescence.

Speaking about her first major film project, Emily said, “I am proud to be a creator and cast member of this project. ‘Un(known) Number’ is more than just a mystery film; it’s an exploration of the unseen challenges faced by today’s teenagers. I am honoured to bring to life the incredible part written for me by my friend Zofia Morgan.”

Emily worked behind the scenes managing the film’s social media and has fostered the fastest growing Instagram account of any 2023 YAA project!

Emily has already made waves in the local industry with performances in national musicals, and commercial productions, numerous TV credits and her radio show “The Breakfast Bunch” on Northside Radio FM99.3.

‘Un(known) Number’ is set for premier on the 18th of December at the Chevel Cinema before being sent to international film festivals and released on streaming services.

Good luck with the film Emily.
