Nine Reasons to Shop at Figtree Greengrocer Lane Cove West at Christmas (and anytime of the year)

Christmas is coming, and if you want to impress family and friends, then start with shopping for fresh ingredients.  When it comes to fruit, vegetable and deli items, it is worth a trip to Figtree Greengrocers.

Figtree Greengrocers has been servicing the Lane Cove Community for over 40 years

They pride themselves on quality with the finest produce full of flavour.

“Don’t waste your money on fruit and veg that after 2 days it ends up in the bin! Forget about the Rest and come back to Figtree for the best!”

Figtree Greengrocers is a family-owned business that prides itself on being hands-on.

Here are nine reasons to shop at Figtree Greengrocers.

They Hand Select their Products from Flemington Markets

Six days a week, every day of the year (except public holidays), the team from Figtree Greengrocers arrive at Flemington Markets at 3 am and start hand-picking products for you.

When we say hand-picking, we mean hand-picked.

Sam might look through 30 boxes to find enough produce he likes for four boxes.  Mick has been going to the markets for 70 years!!

Christmas Cherries Are Always a Hit

As the produce is selected every day, they only buy what they need.

Last week a customer came into the shop and told the team that they had been away for a month and came back and could still eat the iceberg lettuce they had left in the fridge.  As they say, quality does not cost, it pays.

ITC has been told by friends that they used to buy their fruit and veg at Coles and Woolies, but they don’t last long and all then all they are only good for is the compost bin – so they switched to Figtree Greengrocers.

Award Winning Greengrocer

Figtree Greengrocers have won numerous awards and has been a finalist in some prestigious awards.  They have been a finalist in the Local Business Awards several times.

In 2023 Figtree Greegrocers was a finalist in the Better Choice Retailer of the Year Awards.

The ‘A better choice!’ Retailer of the Year, the People’s Choice Award is designed to highlight the stores that received the most nominations from their local community as their favourite store in celebration of the quality, freshness and service provided at Aussie Independent fruit and veg shops and this year over 29k shoppers nominated 411 individual stores as their favourite fruit and veg shop.
In  2016, Figtree Greengrocer won the Best Small Business award at the Fresh Awards (and have also been a finalist in other years).  This is an amazing achievement and not an easy award to win. You have to be on your game all year round, as you receive three visits from accredited mystery shoppers and visits from the judges. Each mystery shopper completes a comprehensive questionnaire. The questionnaire covers:
  • Store Appearance
  • Customer service
  • Produce quality, range and freshness
  • Product knowledge and culinary execution
  • Merchandising and branding
Jo and Sam with their Fresh Award

This is what the Fresh Awards had to say about Figtree Greengrocer:

“Proprietor Michael Cessario, together with his sons Joe, Sam and Damian, have run this snazzy greengrocer since 2009. They have worked tirelessly to finesse their store presentation, range and service to distinguish themselves as providores of quality service and fruit and vegetables.

Figtree Greengrocer has a broad range of market fresh produce and an impressive assortment of gourmet groceries. The atmosphere is friendly and the ambiance relaxing. Nothing is too much trouble for this team; they deliver on service, quality, and value for money and total shopping experience.”

Customer Service

They also have exceptional customer service (where else do you have someone carry your groceries to your car?).

Jo told ITC:

“We believe in good old-fashioned service and taking care of our customers.  We greet them with a smile, speak to them about the family and take their groceries to the car.

We work in the store six days a week, go to the markets every day to buy the freshest produce for our customers, and never compromise on quality.  If a customer wants a particular item, we can get it in the next day.  For example a customer wanted edible flowers – we had them in the next day.”

Plenty of Parking

You can park undercover near the store, or there is street parking or a car park across the street.

They Support Small Producers and Local Producers

Jo from Figtree Greengrocers is always on the lookout for new and exciting products.

He stocks produce from locals like To Be Frank and Corrinne’s Chimichurri.

ITC wrote an article about two former Lane Cove locals who now live in Mudgee. They were both at the Food and Wine Festival by the River. We mentioned that Linda’s Chilli Relish was enjoyed by locals at the event, and they would love to have a stockist in Lane Cove (an area that the owners lived in for years).
Jo read our article, and the next day, he placed an order for relishes as he loves stocking small and independent products that you don’t find everywhere else.
We got a call from Bruce and Linda saying how excited they were that ITC had mentioned them and they had received an order from a Lane Cove business.  You can read about Linda’s Chilli Relish here.
