Lane Cove News Week in Review 14th to 21st February 2024

Welcome to our week in review. Another wet week, with the Lane Cove Golf Course closed and sporting grounds closed (except for Blackman Park).

Lane Cove Catches Tay Tay Fever

On Friday, 16 February 2024, Lane Cove came alive with a sold-out Taylor and Besties Tribute Show. The tickets were nearly as hard to get as the real Taylor Swift Concert. The crowd loved local Sal Rosen (Phonic Duo) as the support act, and then the main act had the crowd on their feet and singing along to some very popular songs.

Lane Cove Council went all out with friendship bracelet stations and a chance to have your photo with a Life-Size Taylor Cut Out.

Taylor Swift was spotted in Lane Cove – or should we say her private jet was spotted flying over Lane Cove on 19 February 2024.

Does Lane Cove Council Use Recycled Mulch?

Some of our readers asked In The Cove to find out if Lane Cove Council used recycled mulch and if there was any chance that Mulch in Lane Cove could be contaminated with Asbestos.

Good News – A Lane Cove Council Spokesperson told us the following:

“Council is aware that there is community concern following the reports of contaminated mulch in Sydney parks.

Here in Lane Cove, we chip our own mulch for use in garden beds and parks across our local area.

In some playgrounds, we do source a specific mulch for use as a soft fall – this is a natural, clean product sourced from an authorised timber processing mill on the south Coast and is not a recycled product.

Lane Cove Council can confirm it hasn’t sourced any mulch from Greenlife.”

Lane Cove Council Planning Information Session

It was a packed Lane Cove Council Chambers on Tuesday, 21 February 2024, for the Lane Cove Council’s presentation to residents on the NSW State Government Housing Proposal announced late last year.

Lane Cove Council will be presenting their draft submission to the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure to Lane Cove Councillors on Thursday, 22 February 2022. Lane Cove Council is of the view that the one-size-fits-all approach does not work in Lane Cove. In particular, the Lane Cove Council noted that their planning strategy has been to keep the Lane Cove Village low-rise and have apartments built outside the village. The proposed reforms would mean shop-top housing between six to seven stories will be able to be built in the Lane Cove Village.

The NSW government is asking for feedback on the proposal until 23 February 2024 to provide feedback click here –  NSW Government’s planning website.

For information on the current zoning of your land, check NSW Planning Portal Spatial Viewer.

Further Information on the proposed changes is available here.

How Can I Find Out More?

Lane Cove Council hosted a Community Information Session about how the NSW Government’s proposed changes will impact Lane Cove on Tuesday, 20 February 2024.

Watch the presentation here.

Commonwealth Bank Fit Out Has Commenced

The Lane Cove Commonwealth Bank Branch will be relocating from Longueville Road to Lane Cove Market Square (where Eyes 4 You and Cozy Cove used to be). The fit-out has started, and the hoardings are up.

Lane Cove Sustainability Action Group/Lane Cove Council Trial Recycling Bins in Lane Cove Village

The Lane Cove Sustainability Action Group (LCSAG) and many other Lane Covians were dismayed when Lane Cove Council was forced to abandon recycling bins in public areas around the Lane Cove Village due to ongoing contamination problems.

LSAG suggested to Lane Cove Council Sustainability officers that one of the problems with the previous bins was their similarity in all things except colour to the general waste bins, especially in their wide openings.

The Lane Cove Council has agreed to implement a two-week trial until 26 February 2024 of two bins with very stiff rubber rosette necks and signs depicting what can be recycled. A QR code is also linked to a council web page giving more details about the project. One bin is in the Canopy near the lifts, and the other is at the top end of the Lane Cove Plaza village green. LCSAG will monitor these and audit the contents during the trial period.

LCSAG hope the community will welcome the return of some container recycling in the Lane Cove Village and hopes the community will get behind the scheme.

Spooky Men Chorale Wows North Sydney

On Saturday, 17 February 2023, ITC was invited to the North Sydney Independent Theatre to see the Spooky Men’s Chorale. ITC does not venture far from the Lane Cove Local Government Area, but this was worth the ten-minute trip.

The Spooky Men’s Chorale is a group formed in the Blue Mountains in 2001 by Stephen Taberner (a Kiwi by birth). The Spooky Men have performed for over 20 years with sell-out national and international tours.

This is not your bog standard Men’s Choir – they will tell you as they sing We Are Not a Men’s Group that they are not a Men’s Group. The harmonies were terrific, the banter between songs hilarious and their tribute to Ukraine was moving. ITC’s two favourite songs were Give It A Go and their ode to Team Building (anyone who has suffered through a team building day will laugh out loud when they listen to this song).

If you have a chance, check them out when they next come to Sydney – remember they are not a Men’s Group (the video below was recorded at another gig).

Lane Cove Events

Shakespeare in The Canopy

You may have seen Shakespeare at the Beach and Shakespeare in the Park; get ready for Shakespeare at The Canopy on Thursday, 22 February 2024, and Friday, 23 February 2024, from 6 – 8 pm on the big stage. @shakespearienceaustralia is bringing Lane Cove residents A Midsummer Night’s Dream (do not call it A Midsummer’s Night Dream!!).

This is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays. It’s magical and full of symbolism. The play is a joyful, fast-paced romp through the forest where love conquers all.

What could be better than enjoying a midsummer evening on The Canopy lawns with a picnic watching one of Shakespeare’s famous plays? But wait, there’s more: the evening is sponsored by The Canopy and Lane Cove Council, so it is a FREE event.

If you have a child studying Shakespeare (any Shakespeare play), they should come along and watch.
