Stringy Bark Creek Residents Association – Cleaning Up Batten Reserve 2024

On Clean Up Australia Day (or a day close to CUAD), volunteers clean up the Batten Reserve Bushland and the surrounding streets every year.  This year the event was a bit earlier than the official Clean Up Australia Day event (4 March 2024 – see below for local clean up events on the official day).

The event, hosted by The Stringy Bark Creek Residents Association (SBCRA)  and supported by the Lane Cove Sustainability Action Group, brings young and old together to join forces in a massive clean up as part of Clean Up Australia.

This year the event was held on 25 February 2024.

Fifty Locals Helped Clean Up

Around 50 people helped clean up the local streets and the Batten Reserve bushland to remove the rubbish.

The Lane Cove Guides joined in with locals aged from 4 years to 80 yrs participating.

There was even a BBQ to keep the volunteers fed and energised, with the Lane Cove Council covering the costs.

Guess How Much Rubbish Was Picked Up?

A total of around 450kg of rubbish was picked up.  The good news is that there were less bottles and cans which shows that the Return and Earn scheme is working and there were less plastic bags which shows that the ban on single use plastic bags is working.

The bad news the number of spray paint cans continues to increase!!

They picked up the following:

  • 94 Alloy cans
  • 32 Glass bottles
  • 87  Plastic Bottles
  • 61 SprayPaint cans
  • 78 Coffee cups
  • 61 Plastic takeaway Containers

Other Items picked up

  • A quite large children’s play pool
  • Barbed wire
  • Fertilizer sprayer
  • Clay pot pieces
  • Metal furniture rails
  • Large and small plastic bags

Let’s make our life much less plastic, by Refusing, Reusing and Recycling, in that order.
