Welcome to our week in review.

Fatality on Epping Road and Mowbray Road Intersection

A man has died following a single-vehicle crash just after 4 am Tuesday, 9 April 2024; emergency services responded to reports a vehicle had crashed on Epping Road, Lane Cove North.

The Mitsubishi Mirage appears to have lost control and hit multiple traffic lights at the intersection of Mowbray Road before spinning and flipping a number of times.

The male driver and sole occupant of the vehicle died at the scene.

Officers from North Shore Police Area Command have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.

Jack & Co Northwood Re-opens

Jack & Co Food Stores Northwood has now fully reopened, and the pumps are pumping.

It’s been a long wait with numerous blips for Wade and his team. Jack & Co may sell branded fuel, but they are a family-owned business with ties to Lane Cove, and they employ heaps of local kids.

They are also a huge supporter of ITC and will have a launch party on the first week of May with a snag sizzle supporting Lane Cove Junior Rugby Union club. The following was posted on their socials”

“DRUMROLL… this is the announcement that you’ve all been waiting for.

We are pleased to tell you that our Northwood Store fuel forecourt is now reopened with the latest fuel delivery pumps.

You will also notice our store has had a facelift with a new fresh produce section, snow zone and many new product lines.

Watch this space as we announce special activations happening at Northwood to say “Thank You” for your patience.

We can’t wait to see you!”

Welcome back, Wade, Martin and the team (and of course, Fonzie).

Wild about Lane Cove

Over 250 people came along to Mindarie Park to join the Wild About Lane Cove event on Saturday 6th, April 2024.

A wild life presentation was hosted by Australian Wildlife Displays who introduced the audience (mainly young children and families) to a ringtail possum, Tawney Frog Mouth, goanna, blue tongue lizard, python, and green tree frog.

The children could touch the wildlife (gently!) and were taught about the habitats, behaviours and experiences of the animals

The audience was fully engaged and asked questions and told stories about their encounters with local wildlife.

After the event, the audience was treated to a free sausage sizzle courtesy of the Stringybark Creek Residents Association and a bushwalk through Batten Reserve by the Stringybark Bark Creek Bushcare group.

The event was co-presented by Lane Cove Council and Stringybark Bark Creek Residents Association and is a good example of how local resident associations and the council can work together.

Lane Cove in the News

Northwood Arson

One of the men charged in relation to the Cliff Road Arson case was back in court this week, where the magistrate noted Steve Nassif was facing “exceptionally serious charges”.  Mr Nassif’s legal team was seeking an extension of time to prepare a valuation report for the property.   Read The Daily Telegraph’s article here (paywalled).  Details about the fire here.

Changes to Victoria Road Light Sequencing – Impacts Burns Bay Road Traffic

Lane Cove residents have consistently identified the Burns Bay Road/Penrose St Intersection as the intersection that delays a commute. This is an important intersection that provides a connection between two (2) major road corridors that run through the Lane Cove Local Government Area.

Now, with changes made to try to fix the Rozelle Interchange changes, locals are arguing that the State Government is pushing the congestion towards Hunters Hill and Lane Cove.

Our local state member, Anthony Roberts was quoted in the Daily Telegraph today:

“Lane Cove State Liberal MP Anthony Roberts said heavy congestion on Victoria Rd has forced many residents in suburbs such as Gladesville, Ryde and Lane Cove to reconsider their commuting options to avoid the traffic gridlock.

“People are leaving at 6.30am or delaying getting into town after peak hours and that has a big impact for families who also have to drop off kids at school and childcare,” he said.”

Lane Cove Crime, Incidents and Accident Report

Crime

A roving reporter advised us that on the weekend at their blocks of units in central Lane Cove, a man and a woman were spotted on CCTV checking out every car in the unit complex to see if any vehicles were unlocked. All the cars were locked, and the man and the woman left on foot. This is a reminder that most car thefts and break-ins happen when you leave your car unlocked.

This week the following was reported on Lane Cove Chat by ITC:

“Hi everyone, we had our car stolen from outside our home in Longueville late last night. I don’t expect there’s much of a market for a stolen 10 year old Mazda with plenty of miles on the clock, so it might well have been dumped somewhere. If anyone happens to see an aging silver CX9 left where it shouldn’t have been, please send me a message. Cheers, Simon ”

Another report on Lane Cove Chat by ITC:

“My father’s car was stolen from his garage in Linley Point about two weeks ago. We think they broke in through a small door at the back of the garage (behind furniture and other stored goods and up a rickety set of stairs covered in detritus) took the keys from off the hall table and then took the car. No one in the house heard anything. It was later found by police in Mt Druitt burnt out with his walker (now also burnt and melted) still in the boot. My siblings and I care for him 24/7, and this is the main mode of transport. Such a horrible thing for people to do.”

Incidents

This week in Lane Cove ITC noticed a vehicle trying to turn right into the up ramp next to Harris Farm Markets – a nice man had stopped them and was helping them turn around in front of the traffic. This is not the first time this has happened, and that got ITC wondering – if you are new to Lane Cove, how do you know that you cannot turn into the driveway exit ramp? ITC crossed the street, and from some angles, it was impossible to see the No Entry sign.
