Lane Cove News Week in Review 10th to 16th April 2024

Welcome to our week in review.

Lock Your Cars and Houses

In the Cove has received several reports of locals having cars and houses broken into or people scoping out their cars and houses. If we all lock our cars and houses, this acts as a strong deterrent against having cars and property stolen. Items have been stolen from around Chatswood West, and an attempted break-in at Northwood.

An E-bike was recently stolen. The battery was not attached to the bike when it was stolen; the bike was loaded into a car.

Steve Nassif to Plead Guilty

Yahoo has published an article stating, “A property tycoon will plead guilty to destroying a multimillion-dollar waterfront mansion in a fiery inferno as he fights to remain on bail, a court has heard.”  You can read the article here.

Big Belly Bins Not Working in the Lane Cove Plaza

ITC had a few people contact us on Sunday about garbage piling up in Lane Cove Plaza.

It would have been appropriate for the people who had the meals to take home their own garbage.

Several people commented that they refuse to use the Big Belly Bins as they are never cleaned and stink.  We have asked Lane Cove Council several times about how often the bins are cleaned, but the answer is not enough.  Read our article about the stinky bins here.

Business Alerts

Helloworld Travel Lane Cove has moved! Come and see their wonderful new office space opposite Harris Farm. They are ready and waiting to help you book your next holiday.

Backyard Chicken Alert

Backyard chicken owners in Australia have been urged to implement biosecurity measures to prevent contact with wild birds in the wake of a global avian influenza outbreak.

Australia remains the only continent without HPAI H5 (high pathogenicity avian influenza of subtype H5) after scavenging skua birds on mainland Antarctica tested positive for bird flu in February. Symptoms for affected birds include diarrhoea, sneezing, a reduction in egg production and sudden death.

The risk of infection in Australian wild birds is classified as high, after a risk assessment provided to the Department of Agriculture in December. The risk to poultry is listed as moderate to high.

Australia Post Has Longer Time To Deliver Letters

Australia Post will take longer to deliver letters under performance standards agreed with the federal government recognising its growing role in parcels.

Australia Post will have an extra day to deliver standard letters.

For example, a letter posted within a state should be delivered in four days, and no more than five days.

Between states, letter delivery should take between six to eight days.

The government-owned corporation will also be able to change how it manages priority mail, allowing it to deliver services “at a more commercial rate”.

Pride of Work Awards

Do you know a local who should receive recognition for the work they do?

Lane Cove Rotary will be holding its Pride of Work Awards presentation at The Diddy on 21 May 2024.

Each year, Lane Cove Rotary likes to recognise people in our community who do things that make a difference in people’s lives. Their efforts go largely unrewarded or might be underappreciated. We like to recognise them because we believe every job makes a difference, and even what may be viewed as menial tasks by some are integral to a well-functioning community. And when the person performing goes above and beyond or does that job with real care and pride, it makes even more difference.

Lane Cove Rotary would love some nominations from the community to make this Award night very special. If you know someone please contact Kerry Moroney ([email protected]).
