Lane Cove News Week in Review 1st January 2025 to 8th January 2025

Welcome to our first week in review for 2025!

New Year’s Celebrations In The Cove

Many locals rang in the new year by watching the fireworks from popular vantage points around the 2066 postcode and nearby suburbs. Longueville’s streets were packed with spectators for the 9 pm fireworks display, many having enjoyed an evening at The Diddy beforehand. See our cover photo taken on Kenneth Street Longueville at the 9 pm fireworks.

In The Canopy, picnicking revellers and those at Eat Street restaurants were treated to a free concert by Plastic Soul.  For the first time, the 9 pm fireworks were shown on The Canopy big screen.

    Power Interruptions and Trees Down

With the hot, and now wet and windy weather, there have been a few power outages around Lane Cove in the past week. Lane Cove West and North have been impacted.

Windy conditions on Tuesday 7 January caused a tree branch to come down onto Burns Bay Road, near Linley Point Reserve, disrupting traffic.

Also on Tuesday, a truck damaged a tree on Mowbray Road in Lane Cove North , near the Rotary Athletics Field. The damaged tree was in a precarious position near power lines, with Lane Cove Council planning to remove it Tuesday afternoon.

There have been weekly power outages in the Lane Cove West region since the middle of December.

ITC contacted Ausgrid for a comment, and we received the following reply”

“Ausgrid has isolated an underground cable following two unplanned outages in Lane Cove West.

Power was disrupted to around 700 customers on December 23rd and January 4th.

Ausgrid emergency crews discovered a cable fault which was isolated, and power restored.

The section of cable is now undergoing testing to ensure reliability and repairs will be made if needed.

No further unplanned outages are expected in relation to this specific incident.

Ausgrid will contact residents if they are to be impacted by planned repairs.

Check for power outages here: Power Outages – Ausgrid

Never approach fallen powerlines – always assume they are live and stay at least eight metres or two car lengths away.

If you have concerns, please report them online at Ausgrid.com.au/hazards or call us on 13 13 88.

If the situation is life-threatening always call 000.”

After we received this reply there was another outage on 6th January 2025.

A roving reporter noticed that someone had vandalised trees in Warraroon Reserve.

This is a beautiful bush track to walk – read more about the track here.

Illegal Dumping of Waste Around Lane Cove

Roving reporters have been reporting multiple instances of illegal waste dumping around the 2066 postcode. Images of furniture, rubbish, and even toilets have been shared on the Lane Cove Chat by ITC.

There is also frustration with wait times for services such as Council clean up, HomeCycle and Recycle Smart collection wait times. Whilst this is no excuse for illegal dumping, it could be a contributing factor to increased instances of illegal dumping.

If you see illegal dumping, you can report to Lane Cove Council via [email protected] and Snap Send Solve, as well as to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), providing as much evidence as possible.

We have put together an A to Z  of where you can donate and recycle.

Lane Cove Council also has a big reuse and recycle day on 8th Feb 2025 at Blackman Park. Details here

Have Your Say: Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan 2024/25

Lane Cove Council is seeking feedback as it develops a new Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) 2024-25. The PAMP helps to identify actions to provide convenient access and mobility in and around our community. In addition to identifying strategic outcomes, the PAMP will include a works schedule that can be incorporated into other infrastructure plans for clear direction on how to deliver on the commitment to a more accessible community.

    Lane Cove In The News

The Guardian Australia published this article about Australians’ access to public swimming pools. It outlines the postcode lottery associated with accessing and using a public swimming pool, as well as how many residents in a Local Government Area (LGA) you might be sharing it with.

The barriers to access contribute to disadvantages in residents having the opportunity to learn to swim.

Across Sydney’s LGAs, Lane Cove LGA fairs extremely well, with our Aquatic Centre servicing 20,775 residents. Residents in the City of Parramatta have approximately one pool per 134573 residents – the highest across Sydney’s LGAs.
