The Art of Giving Food

Simple recipes and clever wrapping ideas for gifts that are delicious and beautiful.

Finding the right gift for an elderly relative or friend can be tricky as they often don’t want more ‘things’ but you don’t want to give them nothing! We recently celebrated Matt’s mum’s birthday and it made me realise how perfect a homemade food gift can be, particularly when it’s one of their favourite foods.

Wrap it beautifully in a tea towel or add ribbon and a flower and it becomes a little piece of art.

A gift made with love and care is always appreciated.

Classic Food Ideas

Here are three recipes I think the older person in your life will love. All are easy to eat (not tooth breakers!), simple to make and delicious of course! I’ve chosen lemon recipes as it suits most tastes.

Lemon Syrup Cakes

Small cakes are ideal for smaller appetites. These cakes also freeze beautifully, so your gift will keep on giving. I like to gently warm in the microwave once out of the freezer. The almond meal in this recipe makes it a higher protein option than plain flour based cakes, making it more satisfying and a little more nourishing.Lemon Syrup Cake Recipe

Sicilian Almond Biscuits

Young and old love these! Soft and a little chewy with the freshness of lemon. So simple to make too.Sicilian Almond Biscuit Recipe

Lemon Curd

A classic and one that will bring back memories I’m sure. Spread on toast, add to a scone with cream or swirl through yoghurt or ice cream.

I use this Thermomix recipe as I don’t have the patience for stirring over a double boiler. If you don’t have a Thermomix you could try this recipe from Epicurious that has lots of positive reviews and looks easy.

Simple Yet Beautiful Wrapping Ideas

It’s the little touches that make all the difference and make your gift that extra bit special.

Wrap in a Tea Towel

This is my favourite as who doesn’t love a beautiful new tea towel! You can go for a classic stripe (these from Ikea are a great price if you’re making up multiple gifts). Or floral, either delicate (Zjoosh have soft, pretty ones) or modern and more striking (like Marimekko).

If you’re gifting small cakes or biscuits wrap them in baking paper or place in a box or plastic container and then wrap in the tea towel. Secure with a wide ribbon.

Add Flowers or Herbs

Tucking flowers or herbs under your ribbon is so simple and adds a beautiful fragrance. It’s a thoughtful touch that always bring a smile.Small roses, gardenias, lavender, rosemary, thyme or dried citrus slices all work really well.

Use Recycled Jars or Tins Tied with Ribbon

I often keep pretty or unusual jars and tins to reuse for homemade gifts. Or a simple jar tied with ribbon is a nice touch too.

I hope this makes your gift giving a little easier and tastier. I’d love to know if you have any other ideas.Nutritionist & Caterer
