    Lane Cove News

The key local stories, announcements and updates affecting our community this week.

Australia Day In Lane Cove Canopy

The 2026 Australia Day Citizenship ceremony was held in The Canopy.  Our newest citizens heard from Lane Cove’s Australia Day Ambassador, Samantha Hollier-James, Federal Member for Bennelong, Jerome Laxale, State Member for Lane Cove, Anthony Roberts and Lane Cove Rotarian and 2024 Lane Cove Citizen of the Year, Lindsay May.

Samantha Hollier-James is one of the co-founders of Tour de Cure.  Samantha learned from her mother and Nan that caring for others together creates a strong community and a better life. Her upbringing nurtured her self-belief and her ability to reach out, share ideas, and dream big. When her beloved Nan developed bowel cancer and died, Samantha became determined to forge a movement to cure cancer.

With friends Geoff Coombes and Gary Bertwistle, she co-created Tour de Cure, a charity that has already raised over $158 million and funded 1,228 cancer research, support, and prevention projects.  She has also been a finalist for Australian of the Year.

There were many happy faces as they received their certificates.

Our newest citizen also received a native plant from the Lane Cove Council Community Nursery.

After the ceremony, Lane Cove Rotary supplied snags and lamingtons in the Lane Cove Plaza.  There was also face painting and music until early afternoon.

School Zones Are Now in Force

School zone speed limits are now back in effect across Lane Cove, with 40km/h limits applying from Tuesday, 27th January 2026.   This took some people by surprise as local public schools have four pupil-free days.

Some schools, particularly non-government schools, return earlier than others, and in areas where multiple schools are close together, start dates may differ. Transport for NSW said that the school zone started prior to public schools starting back to avoid confusion, as some private schools will start school this week.
