Birrahlee Preschool Opens Its Doors to the Community This May

A Lane Cove preschool with more than six decades of history is inviting locals to step inside and experience what makes it so special.

Birrahlee Preschool will host its Open Day on Saturday 16 May 2026 from 10am to 12pm, welcoming current families, prospective enrolments and the wider community.

More Than 60 Years of Community Connection

Birrahlee Preschool has been part of Lane Cove life since 1959, making it one of the area’s longest-running early childhood education centres.

Founded by local families and still operating today as a community-based, not-for-profit preschool, Birrahlee has remained true to its original purpose — creating a nurturing, inclusive space where young children can learn through play.

Over the decades, thousands of local children have attended Birrahlee, with many families returning generation after generation. That strong sense of continuity and connection is something the preschool is particularly proud of.

Being community-run means families play an active role in the preschool, helping shape its direction and maintaining the warm, connected environment it’s known for.

A Play-Based Approach That Stands the Test of Time

While much has changed in early education over the years, Birrahlee’s philosophy has remained consistent.

The preschool focuses on play-based learning, encouraging curiosity, creativity and confidence. Its experienced educators support children to develop social skills, independence and a love of learning — all within a safe and supportive environment.

The outdoor spaces, in particular, are a highlight, giving children the chance to explore, imagine and connect with nature as part of their everyday learning.

Step Inside at the Open Day

The upcoming Open Day is a chance for families to see Birrahlee in action. Visitors can:

  • Meet the Director and teaching team
  • Explore the classrooms and outdoor learning spaces
  • Learn more about the preschool curriculum
  • Connect with other local families

Whether you’re starting to think about preschool options or already planning ahead, it’s a relaxed way to get a feel for the environment.

A Fun Morning for the Whole Community

The Open Day isn’t just about information — it’s also a chance to bring the community together.

There will be plenty happening on the day, including:

  • Sausage sizzle
  • Cake stall
  • Craft activities
  • Face painting
  • Raffle and silent auctions
  • Burns Bay Bookery

As a not-for-profit preschool, funds raised will go directly back into supporting Birrahlee’s programs and facilities.
