As you know, it has been raining a lot lately. Heavy Rain means potholes, and ITC has noticed a few potholes and rough road patches around lately and not just in Lane Cove.
A local resident contacted In the Cove after writing to Lane Cove Council about what they described as a “significant dip and depression” in the road surface at the intersection of Birdwood Road and Longueville Road. We thought it was a good time to reshare some practical information on how residents can report potholes and road surface issues.
The resident said the section of road was creating a noticeable jolt for motorists, describing it as “painful and uncomfortable” for daily commuters. They were particularly concerned about the impact on people transporting passengers with disabilities, saying the “jarring movement can cause considerable discomfort and pain.”
ITC went to have a look and it’s a decent dip in the road (although it’s hard to see in the photo). While it may not technically be a pothole, the patched section appears uneven and deteriorating.

Potholes and road surface issues can appear quickly after wet weather, heavy traffic or underground works, and responsibility for fixing them can depend on whether the road is managed by council, Transport for NSW or another authority.
In 2025, ITC put together a guide on how to report potholes and road issues, including what information to include when making a report.
Read our guide here: Rain = Potholes – How To Report a Pothole to Lane Cove Council
If you are not sure who manages the road, report it to Transport for NSW via the online form or call 131 700. For local roads, the report will be passed on to the relevant authority. You can also report local road issues directly to Lane Cove Council via its “Report a road issue” form.
In short – this is what you should do
If you notice a pothole, road dip or damaged road surface, take a photo if safe to do so, note the exact location and report it directly to the relevant authority.
You can also let ITC know if there is a recurring local issue residents should be aware of – you can submit news or updates to us here
