Cancer Council NSW is using Lung Cancer Awareness Month this November to urge eligible people to join the free National Lung Cancer Screening Program.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Australia. Most cases are found at an advanced stage when treatment options are limited.
The program offers free screening every two years to people aged 50 to 70 with no symptoms who smoke or have quit in the past 10 years. You also need a smoking history of at least 30 pack-years. That’s a pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15.
Cancer Council NSW says five-year survival is 67.7% for people diagnosed early but just 3.2% at a late stage.
