NSW Free Tree Giveaway
In 2022, households will be able to apply for free trees in July from NSW Government’s partner, IndigiGrow – an all Aboriginal owned, not-for-profit.
The first 1,000 households to apply in July can claim one of the following orders from IndigiGrow:
- Edible trees: 2 x140mm pots, or 3 x tubestock
- Non-edible trees: 3 x 140mm pots, or 4 x tubestock.
A range of species are available for order, head to the Planning Portal to see what’s available. To find out more details about any particular species visit IndigiGrow’s website.
Tress must be collected from IndigiGrow nursery located within La Perouse Public School. Once IndigiGrow has made contact with you from their email [email protected], you will have 14 days to pick up your free trees.
How do I order my free trees?
- Create a Planning Portal account or log in with your MyServiceNSW details.
- Once in the Planning Portal you may be taken to a page that says, “Nothing but space” or see a blank screen. Click on the blue box with three lines in the top left-hand corner of your screen or on the + (plus sign).
- Click on ‘Free Tree Application’.
- Complete the form by:
- selecting which trees you wish to claim: you must select your trees from the drop-down list. In July we are offering 4 trees, either 2 edible trees, 3 tubestock edibles, 3 non-edible or 4 non-edible tubestock trees
- filling in the address field: we suggest that you start by typing your street name and select your address from the drop-down list. Note that the available addresses will auto update while you continue to type. If you don’t select your address from the drop-down list, ‘Your property is not eligible for a Free Tree’ will appear.
- Click ‘Submit’. Once submitted you will receive a confirmation email.
- Wait for IndigiGrow to send you an activation email from [email protected] to let you know your tree(s) are ready to be collected. If you have not received an email, please check your junk or spam folders.
- Collect your tree(s) from IndigiGrow in La Perouse within 14 days of notification.
If you’re getting an error when completing your free tree application:
- for optimal performance, we recommend using a desktop device. Noting that the NSW Planning Portal works best in Google Chrome. For more advice visit the Planning Portal support page.

Lane Cove’s Backyard Habitat Programme
If you’d prefer something more local then a reminder you can also access free native plants through our Backyard Habitat program.
The free, year-round Backyard Habitat program provides on-site advice, resources and free plants to those who are looking to create native habitat gardens on their own property.
Join Lane Cove’s Backyard Habitat program and receive:
- Free advice on how to create a native garden specific to your site. This involves a one on one consultation at your property followed up by a written report.
- Free native plants from the Council nursery.
- An information pack about the environment where you live, its flora, fauna, biodiversity and conservation.
- How to manage weeds more effectively.
- Local native plants lists for a bush friendly backyard.
- How to manage residential gardens in ways that do not harm bushland.
- Follow up consultations and plants.
- Invitations to native garden design talks and other relevant workshops.

The Lane Cove Bushland & Conservation Society plant stall will next be held on 3 September 2022 in the Lane Cove Plaza on Saturday 20 March, 9 am to 12 noon.
