Two Lane Cove council area residents have been recognised in this year’s King’s Birthday honours list.
The Governor-General today announced Honours and Awards for 1,191 Australians, including awards in the Order of Australia (General and Military Divisions), meritorious awards and recognition for distinguished and conspicuous service.
“Congratulations to the outstanding Australians recognised in today’s Honours List. Recipients have made substantial contributions and had a significant impact at the local, national or international level. Some are volunteers, others have had a remarkable impact in professional roles – many have done both. They are all inspiring and their service is valued by us all,” the Governor-General said.
“Learning about the wide-ranging service of recipients, which spans almost every field of endeavour imaginable, is uplifting and makes me enormously optimistic for our country. Collectively they speak to who we are now and who we can be in the future.”
Notably, for the first time since the Order of Australia was established in 1975, the majority of recipients in the General Division are women. Similarly, there is gender parity or better at the three highest levels in the Order.
“While we can take a moment to acknowledge the significance of achieving gender parity in our Honours, it should not be a cause for pause. We reflect on our progress, and then recommit our efforts to ensure nominations reflect our diverse and strong community.”

Lyndall McNally is well known to ITC. She is always promoting the Lane Cove Youth Orchestra and providing opportunities for Lane Cove Youth to be involved in music.
Lyndall and her family moved to Lane Cove at the end of 1985.
In around 1990, she took her young children to see a ‘Babies Prom’ concert in the Lane Cove Town Hall (now demolished). Colin Piper OAM, the esteemed percussionist and conductor, was conducting the (adult) Lane Cove Orchestra. Lyndall and her children were thrilled with the concert, so a seed had been sown.
Years later, when Lyndall’s children were students at Lane Cove Public School, they started learning music through the school’s strong instrumental music program.
“When my eldest child was in year 6, Lane Cove Public School had a truly remarkable symphony orchestra. A small group of parents thought it a shame that this group would disintegrate at the end of the year as students would disperse to many different high schools, so the idea of a community youth orchestra was born, and I enthusiastically put up my hand to help,” Lyndall said.
ITC asked Lydnall to tell us about some of her personal highlights while being involved in the Lane Cove Youth Orchestra. Lyndall said:
“So many highlights! If I must pick just one, I can’t, so I’ll pick two:
- Cockatoo Island music camp and final concert in May 2013. A huge effort but so exciting.
- Inspired by Art, the student composition project culminating in a formal concert at the Conservatorium of Sydney in September 2019.”
“This award is a huge honour and is way more than I deserve. For three decades, it has been a privilege for me to work with our community’s young musicians and the professional artists who have helped to nurture their talents. Many others have helped over the years and I share this honour with them,” Lyndall said.
Lyndall has also been involved in bringing the Lane Cove Youth Orchestra closer to their audience and had staged two concerts at the Lane Cove Aquactic Centre where the audience is encouraged to swim and listen.

Dr Sinclair and his wife have lived in the Lane Cove area for all of their married lives: first at Riverview, then Northwood, and now at the Baytree Retirement Village in Greenwich.
“The Award is a great honour built on a career in universities, together with widespread service in education through a range of organisations locally, nationally, and internationally,” Dr Sinclair said.
Dr Sinclair is currently a Patron of the NSW Institute for Educational Research, which was established in 1928. It’s a professional organisation of scholars and researchers in education.
Among its activities are:
- providing scholarships for beginning researchers;
- hosting the annual Wyndham Lecture (honouring the contribution to education of Sir Harold Wyndham);
- hosting a yearly conference showcasing the research of young scholars;
- and convening conferences for practising teachers.
Dr Sinclair was a past president of the Institute. In 2018 he presented the Sir Harold Wyndham Lecture. His address was titled: The Rich 90-Year Heritage of the NSW Institute for Educational Research

The Order of Australia recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement.
Anyone can nominate any Australian for an award in the Order of Australia. If you know someone worthy, nominate them now at gg.gov.au.
The Order of Australia also has a Military Division. Awards in the Military Division are recommended to the Governor-General by the Minister for Defence.
