Lane Cove North Traffic Safety Issues Due to Trucks Queuing on Main Roads

Lane Cove North residents have been living with poor traffic control on numerous construction sites for many years, with large trucks idling on major roads waiting for their turn to be called to sites.

This week the issue was again raised on Lane Cove Chat by ITC.  Large Trucks park on Centennial Avenue near Elizabeth Parade and Arding Street, waiting to be called up to sites.  It clogs up the road, creates environmental issues due to idling, and makes it very difficult for locals to exit streets like Arding Street and Elizabeth Parade safely.  Mayor Andrew Zbik noted that three fines were issued last month.

ITC again poses the question (which we have raised several times at the Lane Cove Council Public Forum) does Lane Cove Council have sufficient compliance resources to monitor Construction Traffic Management Plans?  Lane Cove Council appears to have a reactive enforcement system rather than a proactive enforcement system relying on or residents to raise issues.  There is significant construction in Lane Cove North, River Road and St Leonards South and the issue is going to escalate.

Optus Issues

Optus customers in the Lane Cove area have been experiencing reception issues and call drop outs.  We asked Optus to advise why this was happening, and they explained that they were upgrading a tower, meaning that Optus customers will be impacted until mid-December 2022.  They provided the following information:

“At Optus, we are always looking to improve our services to ensure our customers are connected to the latest technology.

Some Optus customers in the Lane Cove Council Region and surrounds may have experienced recent disruptions to their service.

We are currently undertaking 5G network upgrades in the Lane Cove Council area and while this will benefit customers in the longer term, some customers may temporarily be impacted while we carry out this upgrade.

Optus is committed to keeping our customers connected. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused our customers.

Optus anticipates these upgrades will be complete by mid-December.”

A roving reporter took this photo of the tower being worked on last week – looks complicated.

Busways Meeting

As we have previously mentioned, Busways continues to cancel services, and the company has now been nicknamed “Buswas” on Lane Cove Chat by ITC.

On Friday, 7th December 2022, ITC attended a meeting at Anthony Roberts’ office with Anthony Roberts, his staff, and a representative of Transport for NSW and Busways.

ITC explained the issues and the fact that all of Lane Cove was experiencing cancellations, but in particular, Lane Cove North was impacted the most, with the 292 and 288 being cancelled more than other services.

Busways outlined several projects they have in motion to provide more certainty for bus users and hope to release those plans soon.   After the meeting, Anthony Roberts published the following on his Facebook page.

ITC also met with Tim James, State Member for Willoughby.  Lane Cove North residents who live on the Mowbray Public School side of Mowbray Road are located in the State Electorate of Willoughby.  Tim James said he was in constant contact with the Region 7 Busways operations manager and would be raising the problems with the 292 and 288 buses with the operations manager.

Sydney Water Outage Northwood and Longueville

This week, ITC has had further extensive conversations with Sydney Water about their notification system again failed to provide updates to locals in Northwood and Longueville Road after a burst water main on 1 December 2022 resulted in a water outage lasting from 7.00 am to 1.30 pm.  Residents were again without water but were not sure if it was their specific property or a suburb-wide issue.

ITC wrote an 11-page report on the issues with the Sydney Water outage notification system and sent it to Sydney Water. They have invited ITC to meet with them to assist them in upgrading their notifications.

This event took place in the same week that the results of an independent review of the Lane Cove September 2022 Water Outage were released.

Sydney Water has confirmed its processes were inadequate during the September 2022 Epping Road Lane Cove Water Outage and has agreed to implement all the findings in the independent report on the incident.  Read our article here.

NSW Health Releases Warning To be On Alert for Symptoms of Meningococcal Disease

NSW Health is urging parents and young people to be alert to the symptoms of meningococcal disease and act immediately if they appear.  Children under five and 15 to 25-year-olds are at the greatest risk of contracting the disease.

Meningococcal disease is a rare, but serious and sometimes fatal infection.

So far this year, there have been 29 cases of meningococcal disease reported in NSW. The majority of cases have been due to meningococcal B strain of the infection.

Sadly, a woman in her late teens has died from meningococcal disease. This is the third death due to meningococcal disease in NSW this year.

While meningococcal disease is now uncommon thanks to vaccination, it can occur year round. We tend to see increases in late winter and early spring. We have seen a slight increase in cases in recent weeks, compared with the same period over the previous five years.

There are different strains of infection, and the disease can occur in people even if they have been vaccinated.

Check that you and your children are up to date with vaccinations. Babies can receive the Meningococcal B vaccine from six weeks of age and the Meningococcal ACWY vaccine at 12 months.

Executive Director of Health Protection NSW, Dr Jeremy McAnulty said early intervention can be lifesaving.

“Meningococcal disease symptoms can appear suddenly and become very serious very quickly. I urge everyone not to discount symptoms when they appear or assume it may be just a mild infection. If you suspect meningococcal disease, don’t wait for the rash – see a doctor immediately,” Dr McAnulty said.

Meningococcal disease can be fatal within hours if left untreated. Knowing the symptoms could help prevent premature death or life-long disability. They include:

  • Severe, unexplained limb pain
  • Difficulty waking up
  • High pitched crying in babies
  • Severe headache
  • Upset by bright lights
  • Stiff neck
  • Red-purple rash which doesn’t disappear when pressed with a glass

“While it is a well-known symptom of meningococcal disease, the rash does not always occur, or may present late in the illness,” Dr McAnulty said.

“If symptoms rapidly worsen, or if your child is very unwell, call Triple Zero (000) or go straight to your nearest emergency department.”

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself, your loved ones and community from the harmful effects of meningococcal disease.

Under the National Immunisation Program, meningococcal ACWY (Men ACWY) vaccine is provided free for babies at 12 months, adolescents, and people of all ages with certain medical conditions. In NSW, the adolescent dose is delivered through the school vaccination program in Year 10.

As of 1 July 2020, Aboriginal children up to the age of two years, and people with certain medical conditions, can also access free meningococcal B (Men B) vaccine.

All children from six weeks of age can have the Men B vaccine to reduce the risk of infection.

For more information on vaccination or symptoms, transmission, risks and treatment of Meningococcal, see the NSW Health website.

Community Independent Announced

It was announced today that Lane Cove local Victoria Davidson will be a candidate in the NSW State Election in March 2023. She is an independent.

The local group which found and launched Kylea Tink’s successful federal campaign, North Sydney’s Independent, asked Victoria to be a community independent candidate for Lane Cove.

Victoria is a lawyer and mediator who has worked in corporate and commercial law, the arts and for the last 11 years as the Business Manager for The Foot Group, a podiatry clinic she runs with her husband, Andrew Scown.

They have lived in Lane Cove for 15 years with their three children and dog, Max.

Victoria says “We need to do politics differently, to develop a forward looking economy that provides for all of us, to do more and act more quickly to counteract climate change, and to make sure public money is spent effectively and efficiently. Lane Cove will have a clear choice in the March NSW election”.

Nominations close on 8 March 2023 for those who might be interested in being a candidate for the Lane Cove NSW State electorate.

Loss of Tree Canopy in Environmental Zone at Lane Cove Golf Course

The Lane Cove Bushland and Conservation Society were shocked to see that numerous trees had been removed from an E2 conservation zone at the Lane Cove Golf Course and in areas where there was a bush regeneration project.  It occurred in the same week that Lane Cove Council agreed to

  •  involve the community in the selection of a name for the area currently known as the Northwood Slope along the western edge of the Golf Course; and
  •  consider increasing the current Golf Course Bush Regeneration budget by $10k in next financial year’s budget.

The Lane Cove Golf Club had only been advised that the Lane Cove Council would be trimming trees.

Lane Cove Council issued an apology for the loss of the tree canopy and acknowledged that the works have resulted in an unacceptable loss of tree canopy. They released the following statement:

“Lane Cove Council regrets the extent of tree loss at the Lane Cove Golf Course due to recent tree management works.

The works were in response to issues raised by golf players and the course operator in relation to player safety due to overhanging trees, which also impacted the playability of the course.

The trees had not been managed or trimmed for approximately 20 years. Many trees had grown at an acute angle over the fairway and become unstable. The works are permissible in the E2 zoned areas which adjoin parts of the golf course. Trees in this zone sometimes require maintenance and tree management.

Contractors were engaged by Council, who worked under the instruction of a Council arborist. Initially the trees were intended to only be pruned, however once the works commenced it became apparent that extensive pruning was required and a large number trees needed to be removed. Selective tree pruning to address safety issues can often lead to trees requiring removal due to instability being created by the removal of the dangerous limbs. If left in an unstable condition there is a high likelihood that they would have fallen over, creating an even larger safety risk than the one that was initially being addressed.

Notwithstanding the  above, Council accepts  that  the works have resulted in an unacceptable loss of tree canopy and apologises for this outcome. Council is reviewing its processes to ensure that this does not occur in the future. At a minimum, this will include dual signoff of any tree management in a public place where more than 3 trees are proposed  to  be removed or heavily pruned as part of tree management works.

Council staff are currently determining additional works to be undertaken to accelerate the regeneration of the tree canopy.”

North Shore is described as:

“North Shore is a six-part series set on and around Sydney Harbour. It follows the clash of cultures when British and Australian detectives team to solve a complex murder mystery, and uncover a conspiracy with international political consequences.”

Lane Cove Mayoral Christmas Drinks

Last Wednesday night, Lane Cove Mayor Andrew Zbik held the Lane Cove Mayor’s Christmas Drinks – these drinks are held to thank locals who are on Lane Cove Council Advisory Committee on a voluntary basis and other volunteers who present council workshops.

Thank you to the numerous locals who volunteer their time to assist the council in providing services to the Lane Cove public. ITC managed to snap a few photos.

Disability Housing in Lane Cove

The National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation (NHFIC), together with specialist community housing provider BlueCHP and social impact fund manager For Purpose Investment Partners (FPIP), has announced a $20 million investment in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) projects across four Local Government Areas (LGAs) in New South Wales.

The first stage of the project is expected to comprise a minimum of 11 homes to accommodate 17 SDA-eligible residents across development sites in Boolaroo, Ryde, Rydalmere and Lane Cove. BlueCHP will develop the homes and maintain the facilities on a long-term basis.

The homes qualify under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) as specialist disability accommodation and will be built to specific SDA design categories. BlueCHP’s unique 7 Step ‘Guide You Home’ process works with families and carers to ensure the homes are designed and fitted out with features that will enable residents to live more independently and that will assist with the delivery of support for residents with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. There will also be onsite overnight assistance for all residents.

The financing arrangement for the initial development costs, involves FPIP funding the development, and NHFIC providing debt facilities post-completion as part of a broader $20 million facility, with the intention to scale this facility as opportunities arise. The post-completion funding from NHFIC enables FPIP to recycle a portion of its capital into additional BlueCHP homes.

Construction is underway on three sites with the balance of sites to be completed in 2023.

Security, Crime, Incident and Accident Report

Unfortunately, with the start of school holidays for some senior year classes, there has also been an increase in graffiti and vandalism in the Lane Cove Council Area.

The Tennis Practice wall at Central Park was targeted.

A roving reporter advised us the following on Monday 5 December 2022:

“Our car was vandalised sometime this weekend in Lane Cove North. I don’t believe it was targeted at us, but nevertheless a disappointing thing to have happen.

I will make a police report and check with neighbours for CCTV. However I wanted to ask the community if anything else like this has happened recently?”
