Lane Cove News

Saturday’s Storm Put On a Show

Saturday evening managed to squeeze an entire weather forecast into about half an hour: rain, wind, thunder and lightning, then a golden sky and a double rainbow. And then, naturally, the messages to ITC started coming in. Among the damage was a tree that came down onto a parked car in Woodford Street on Saturday night. We hope everyone is okay. Spotted storm damage? Let us know. For help with fallen trees or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.

Can You Help Giorgio Find His 1994 Host Family?

Now this is the kind of message we love receiving. Giorgio Tosetti Dardanelli stayed with a Lane Cove family back in 1994 and has written to us from Italy hoping to reconnect with them. He is looking for Tony Norman, an architect, Lorraine Norman, who worked as an accounting executive, and their son Matthew, who was 14 at the time. If that’s you, or you know them, get in touch with ITC and we’ll happily play international Lane Cove matchmaker.

Glenaeon Student Crowned Portrait Artist of the Year

Middle Cove’s Glenaeon is celebrating after Year 12 student Jasmine Lancaster Merton won Season 2 of ABC TV’s Portrait Artist of the Year. And this isn’t her first big art win. Jasmine also won the 2025 Young Archie. Quite the résumé before even finishing Year 12. Congratulations Jasmine! More from Glenaeon.

Lili Walks for Mary’s House

Year 9 Monte Sant’ Angelo student Lili Shaw has spent the past few weeks raising money for Mary’s House, which supports women and children affected by domestic and family violence in our community. She will take part in the Mary’s House Walk on Sunday 25 October, and she would love some local support. You can donate to Lili’s fundraiser or sign up to join the walk yourself. Every donation helps.

Golf Course Drainage Under Review

Lane Cove Golf Club says members have documented drainage problems on the shared 1st and 10th fairway since construction of the Galuwa Recreation Centre and Amara Residences, and Council is arranging an independent peer review. Safety fencing near the original 7th and 9th holes is also on the way. Read the Golf Club newsletter.

$1 Million to Make Chatswood South Feel Safer

Willoughby Council has secured $1 million through Transport for NSW’s Safer Cities: Her Way 2 program for the Chatswood South Precinct. Over two years, local women, girls and gender diverse people will be invited on walkshops, by day and after dark, to point out what feels unsafe and help design the fixes, from better lighting and clearer sight lines to public art and wayfinding. Willoughby is one of 23 councils funded and the only one on the Lower North Shore. More on Safer Cities.

In the Media

Gold Never Gets Old for John Notley, 99

Lane Cove Masters swimmer John Notley made the Mosman Daily last week, and honestly, it’s easy to see why. At 99 he still trains up to three times a week, won three gold medals at the Masters State championships in April and holds the Australian record for the men’s 95 to 99 short course 100m backstroke. A founding member of Lane Cove Masters back in 1978, he turns 100 next June and already has his eye on competing in the 100-plus age group. His advice? “Get out of the lounge chair and into the water.” Fair enough, John. Lane Cove Masters trains on Tuesday nights at the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre.

John Notley featured in the Mosman Daily.

Lane Cove Misses Out on Faster DA Cash

The NSW Government has named 44 councils sharing up to $73 million in Round 2 of its Faster Assessments Incentive, with grants of up to $3 million each for speeding up development approvals. Willoughby cut its average DA time from 189 to 101 days and North Sydney improved by 43 days. Lane Cove, Hunters Hill and Mosman? Not on the list this round. See the full list.

Have Your Say

Last Days to Comment on AI Infrastructure

If you’ve been following the data centre debate in Lane Cove West, this one is worth knowing about. The Federal Government’s consultation, Getting it right: Building AI infrastructure that works for Australia, closes on Friday 9 October. With a cluster of data centres already built and more proposed in Lane Cove West, Lane Cove Council is encouraging residents to have their say. Start with Council’s data centres page.

Help Shape the Coal Loader’s Future

North Sydney Council is putting together the first ever Strategic Management Plan for the heritage-listed Coal Loader at Waverton. It won’t change how the land is used, but it will help shape the site’s long-term direction, community use and future works. Love something about the Coal Loader? Think something could be better? Tell Council through the survey or interactive map by Tuesday 8 December.

Would You Use a Community Bus?

Could a little local shuttle make getting into Lane Cove Village easier? Following recent bus route changes, Lane Cove Council is asking residents whether they would use a community bus. One option being looked at is an off-peak shuttle connecting Greenwich and Riverview with Lane Cove Village. The survey closes Tuesday 13 October on Have Your Say.

Questions About the Draft Bike Plan?

Council’s Draft Bike Plan, which maps out a proposed 31.6km cycling network, is open for feedback on Have Your Say. If filling in an online form isn’t your thing, Council staff will also be at the Rotary Fair on Sunday 11 October, outside the lifts at The Canopy, so you can ask your questions in person.

Strata Committee Training Now Compulsory

If you’ve just joined your strata committee, there’s now homework. From 1 October, new strata committee members in NSW must complete a free one-hour online course within three months of being appointed. It comes as strata mediation applications jumped 30% in a year, with repairs and maintenance now behind about 40% of disputes. Find the course here.

Know Before You Buy an E-Bike

Thinking about an e-bike for yourself or one of the kids? Check what you’re actually buying. The first 23 illegal e-bikes seized on the Northern Beaches were crushed this week, including one that could top 90km/h and was taken from a 14-year-old. Legal e-bikes stop assisting at 25km/h and are limited to 250 watts, so look for the EN 15194 standard before you buy. E-bike rules explained.

Lime Bike Blocking Your Footpath?

Yes, there is actually somewhere to report it. Shared e-bikes left across footpaths and driveways are a common complaint, particularly around Greenwich. If one is in the way, report it to Lime on 1800 861 305 or at [email protected]. Lime is required to deal with it within three hours, and faster where accessibility is affected. Council can only move a bike if there’s an obvious safety risk, and proper parking zones are still being worked out.

Book Your Free Breast Screen

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Women aged 50 to 74 can have a free breast screen every two years, and a record 390,000 women were screened in NSW last year. Book on 13 20 50 or through BreastScreen NSW.

North Sydney New Year’s Eve Tickets on Sale Wednesday

Yes, we’re already talking about New Year’s Eve. Tickets for North Sydney’s harbourside New Year’s Eve vantage points go on sale at 9am on Wednesday 7 October. Cremorne Point is run by Council for the first time, Bradfield Park Lower is a new ticketed site and the free accessible platform at Milsons Point grows to 250 places. Local Sports

Lane Cove Cricket Club Off to a Flyer

Lane Cove Cricket Club is off to a very decent start. Round 2 against Strathfield saw 1st Grade keep their winning streak going, bowling Strathfield out for 91 in reply to 163, while 2nd Grade got their first win of the season. Player of the week was Joe Camarsh with four wickets and 27 runs.

$6,112 Raffle Boost for Lane Cove Netball

Lane Cove Netball Club has had a VERY good raffle. The club raised $5,112 in the Hyundai Community Netball Raffle and was the top fundraising club in Sydney Metro, earning a $1,000 bonus on top. And apparently Lane Cove bought the lucky tickets too. First prize, a brand-new Hyundai INSTER, went to a Lane Cove Netball Club family, and the third prize winner is a club member too. The $6,112 raised goes straight into helping keep registration fees down.

70 Years on the Water for Ian and Jack

This is a pretty extraordinary local milestone. Ian Meggitt and Jack Winning joined the Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Skiff Club a week apart in August 1956, back when new members had to front a Monday night general meeting to be accepted. Seventy years on, both are still active members. Ian was sailing a VJ around 1958 and Jack went on to race 12ft skiffs. That’s some innings. Congratulations to you both!

18 New Sailors Hit the Water

The club’s first Learn to Sail course of the season is running this week with 18 new sailors, finishing with a free sausage sizzle and What’s Next info night on Friday 9 October from 4pm. With daylight saving here, Friday twilight sailing and a free eight-week Transition to Racing program for Learn to Sail graduates start on Friday 16 October. Details on the club website.

Summer Sevens Is Coming, and Needs Referees

Friday nights at Blackman Park are about to get busy again. Lane Cove Summer Sevens runs for seven weeks from Friday 16 October, with games from 4.30pm, plus live music, food trucks and a players’ draw. Most teams are close to full, so register now if you’re keen ($140 per player, individuals welcome). Fancy refereeing? Trials are at Blackman Park this Thursday 8 October from 5pm. Register with Nick beforehand at [email protected].

Go Alex!

Lane Cove Swim Club’s Alex Wilcox has been in Launceston representing the club at the 2026 Australian Transplant Games. Go Lane Cove!

Thank You, Morro and Chuck

Lane Cove Old Ignatians has farewelled two of its grade coaches. John Morrison has been Club Head Coach since the 2024 merger and led 1st Grade for three seasons, capped off this year with the Clark Cup, the first in the club’s history. Chuck Riordan joined in 2025 and turned around a 2nd Grade side that didn’t win a game in 2024, taking them to back-to-back finals series, including a Grand Final in 2025.

Crime, Accidents & Incidents

Driver Charged After Pedestrian Hit on Cullen Street

North Shore Police’s September wrap, released on Friday, says a 39-year-old Lane Cove man was charged after allegedly hitting a pedestrian on a Cullen Street crossing on 1 September while distracted by his phone. The pedestrian suffered two broken legs. He is due to appear at Hornsby Local Court on 5 November.

Marketplace Sale Ends in Robbery Charge

The same release says a 16-year-old was charged after an e-bike sale arranged on Facebook Marketplace allegedly turned into a robbery in Crows Nest on 8 September. Police are reminding locals to take care when buying and selling online.

Fatal Crash on Lane Cove Road, Ryde

A man believed to be in his 60s died in hospital after his Subaru Outback collided with a Toyota Hilux and hit a tree on Lane Cove Road, Ryde, about 3pm on Thursday 1 October. The 34-year-old Hilux driver was treated at the scene. Ryde Police are investigating, and anyone with dashcam footage is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Wedged In at Lane Cove North

Not exactly the Sunday stroll scenery anyone was expecting. A black SUV came to rest against a tree near Kara and Burley Streets, Lane Cove North, on Sunday. A follower later sent us video and, somehow, it was even more confusing in motion: one black SUV, one tree, one wooden post and very little room.

Spun Around on River Road West

On Saturday morning a car slid onto the wrong side of River Road West between Warraroon Road and Barina Road and ended up facing the opposite direction. It’s a tricky bend near Barina Road at the best of times, so slow down there, especially in the wet.

Two More Crashes on Local Roads

And because apparently our local roads were having a week… ITC readers also sent in a crash at the corner of Mowbray Road West and Centennial Avenue near the Metro servo, and a two-car crash on Burns Bay Road just past Penrose Street that closed a southbound lane. Take it easy out there.
