Domestic Violence is a major issue in Australia. The violent deaths of 78 women and children at the hands of family members last year prompted Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to launch a women’s safety programme this week. Last year’s Australian of the Year was Rosie Batty, a domestic violence campaigner. Over a third of all murders in Australia are due to domestic violence, making the home a dangerous place,
Delvena Women’s Refuge is located in Lane Cove. Delvena, provides accommodation and holistic support to women and children who have experienced domestic violence and are homeless as a result. For obvious reasons the address is not publicised to ensure the safety of the people who seek assistance from the Refuge.
It is run by Manly Warringah Women’s Resource Centre which provides a range of support services to women and their children, including crisis and transitional accommodation, early intervention support, group programs and counselling.
In the Cove has been contacted by Delvena and asked if we could let our ITC Facebook Fans know the Refuge is requesting donations of specific items from the Lane Cove community. They know how generous the Lane Cove Community is and they would love to ask for more, however they do not have the space to store a large amount of donations. They have requested the following items urgently:
-
Cash Donations are always gratefully accepted or gift cards or super market cards
- Brand New Linen (single and double bed sheets)
If you would like to donate to Delvena, please send an email to Delvena and state what you are able to donate and include your contact details. They will get back to you as soon as possible. Please be aware that sometimes they are called out of the office on emergencies so it may take it might take about four to five days to get back to you. They only have limited staff. Please also note that due to limited space Delvena is not able on any occasion to accept the following items: books, clothes, toiletries, make-up. Due to very limited space and resources to respond to donations offers, Delvena is also unable to accept items that are not listed as currently needed.
ITC would like to thank Mandy Ambler from C3 Church and Deborah Hill (president of the Lane Cove Chamber of Commerce, Local Accountant and board member of the Lane Cove and Northside Community Services) for bringing the Refuge to our attention.
As a result of talking to Mandy and Deborah ITC has included on www.inthecove.com.au (our soon to be launched website) a Free Stuff page. You will be able to list furniture/household goods that you would like to give away or donate. Delvena will monitor this page and will call you if they need a specific item. We will also use this page to put a call out for Delvena when they need specific large items or care packs.
ITC has spoken to several local residents/community groups who have told us they have donated goods to the Refuge or have provided Christmas Hampers. We are constantly amazed at how generous the Lane Cove Community is and how hard local community groups work to make a difference in Lane Cove.
