Lane Cove Week in Review 21st to 27th October 2018

It was a windy week in Lane Cove with the winds being so strong a tree came down on Centennial Avenue.

    I Fight you Fight

Saint Ignatius’ College Riverview Student, Alex Noble, injured his spinal cord in a training session on Sunday 21st October. Alex has been left with no feeling below his upper chest or below his elbows. In an address to his school friends he told them he was not a quitter and said “I Fight, You Fight”.  A Community Liturgy will be held in the Rose Garden at St Ignatius College on Wednesday 31st Oct 2018 at 5pm. Parking will be available on 2nd field. The Noble Family and St Ignatius’ College would like to invite friends and families from all their associated communities to join them in prayer for Alex.

    Lane Cove Council Meeting

The monthly Lane Cove Council meeting was held on 21 October 2018.  The main issues raised by the public were:

    • Some residents are opposed to Karilla Avenue traffic flow being changed to stop vehicles exiting Karilla Avenue and turning right into Centennial Avenue to drive northbound and to stop southbound travelling vehicles from Centennial Avenue turning left into Karilla Avenue; and
    • Some residents requested an extended consultation period of at least 12 weeks in relation to the St Leonards and Crows Nest 2036 Draft Plan (see below).

Extraordinary Lane Cove Council Meeting 29 October 2018

An extraordinary Lane Cove Council Meeting is scheduled for Monday 29 October 2018 to discuss the St Leonards and Crows Nest 2036 Draft Plan (previously known as the LUIIP) which was released on 15 October 2018.  The plan outlines development and infrastructure in the Crows Nest/St Leonards area to 2036.  Lane Cove Council are seeking more time to review the complicated plans and to hold consultation sessions to incorporate community feedback.

    Ban on Balloons

Another issue addressed by the Lane Cove Council was the ban on balloons. Lane Cove Resident Georgina Towndrow, a professional balloon artist, requested councillors rethink the Lane Cove Village balloon ban. Ms Towndrow pointed out that balloon artists use latex balloons. Latex is a natural and biodegradable product.  Lane Cove Council agreed to review their policy.

    266 Longueville Road Development

The proposed developers of this site have sought a further extension of time to provide information to the Planning Panel.  They are required to submit plans by 21 December 2018.  Residents are concerned that the Planning Panel will schedule their next hearing during the December/January holiday period.  Read more about the background here.

    Lane Cove Shopping Day

In a bid to kick start Christmas shopping and bring shoppers back to the Lane Cove Plaza, the Lane Cove Council held a Shop Local Day on Friday 26th October.  This could not come at a better time.  Riverview Butchers is closing on 3rd November and other businesses are struggling to keep their heads above water.  Notwithstanding these struggles, new businesses continue to open in Lane Cove and a new café will open in the vacant premises next to the Goodwill Shop on Longueville Road.

    Trick or Treat

The Lane Cove Village came alive on Saturday morning with over 150 kids following a scavenger hunt route in Lane Cove.  The event was organised by The Cake Man.

    Empty Premises

The empty shops on Longueville Road have been an eyesore for years with dirty windows and mail piled up on the floor.  Well done to the Lane Cove Council for installing some directional signage. (see our cover photo).

    7 Bridges Walk

On Sunday 28th October hundreds of people walked through Lane Cove.  Central Park Longueville was transformed into a new Lane Cove Village with eateries and music.
