A Picnic at Balls Head: Celebrating 100 Years

24 October 2026 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
Free

North Sydney Council is inviting the community to a free day of picnics, bush walks, live music and family fun on Saturday 24 October, marking 100 years since Balls Head and Berry Island were reserved for public recreation. The celebration takes in Balls Head Reserve and The Coal Loader in Waverton and honours the community members who campaigned to protect the harbour foreshore.

The program includes live and roving music, storytelling, Indigenous face painting, an art exhibition, guided walks and hands-on activities. The first 100 guests from 11:00am receive a free picnic lunchbox, and an Engineering Heritage Marker recognising the Coal Loader’s national significance will be unveiled.

The main celebration runs from 11:00am to 4:00pm, with morning tours and pre-booked activities from 7:30am. A free shuttle bus runs from Waverton between 7:15am and 4:00pm, as parking is limited. Some activities need bookings.
