Lane Cove Golf Club recently completed their Junior Championship. This was the first time it has been held since 2005 and is part of the Club’s revival of junior golf, following 2 years of competing in the Jack Newton Golf Academy Encourage Shield.

The 7 boys and one girl ranged in age from 8 to 14 years and all are students of the Junior Academy run at Lane Cove by PGA Professional James Purcell.

In the picture are seven of the players with winner William Flannagan (handicap 18, right) and runner up Sean Ryan (handicap 10, second from right).

JUNIOR GOLF
This year, for only the second time in many years, the Club has been able to field an Encourage Shield team, an inter-club competition for junior golfers. Over the five weeks of competition, our young golfers were lucky enough to play on some fabulous, top-class courses in Sydney.

The kids who participated were:
Thomas Duncan, Timo Bruggerman, Will Flannagan, Tilly Torrevillas, Lewis Abbott, Sean Ryan, Antony Beaurogot.

The team is made up of very young and relatively inexperienced junior golfers, who are already showing positive signs of developing skills as they move forward with their golf.

All the kids were gracious in victory and defeat and although their handicaps were often higher than their opponents, they held their own each week.

A big thanks to all the parents for their commitment over the five weeks, walking around all the courses, picking up and dropping off. All the kids are excited already for next year’s event.

One of our team members, Lewis Abbott was able to represent his school, Greenwich PS, in the NSW Primary Schools Championships. Lewis was the youngest of his team. Played over two days of 18 holes each day, the quality of the golf was such that one player had a handicap of 4!!
