Lane Cove Local Adrienne Cahalan Inducted into Sailing Australia’s Hall of Fame

The patron of the Lane Cove 12ft Sailing Club is Adrienne Cahalan OAM.  She is one of the biggest female names in Sailing.

She was recently inducted into the Australian Sailing Hall of Fame because she is the fastest woman to sail around the world, a trailblazer, record-breaker and a motivator.

Sailing Career

Adrienne Cahalan has inspired a generation of sailors – male and female – as living proof true grit, determination and talent really can take you to the top of the world. From skiffs and 18-footers to monohulls, round the world races and record attempts, Adrienne has done it all and continues to do more.

Adrienne sailed her first Sydney to Hobart yacht race in 1984.  She has navigated Wild Oats XI to five line honours victories, including two trebles (line honours, overall winner and race record winner).  She has six Sydney to Hobart line honours and two overall Sydney to Hobart wins to her name.

Adrienne is famous for her around-the-world sailing and has been nominated several times for World Yachtswoman of the Year and was Australian Yachtswoman of the Year for 2004–05.

She was part of the crew of Cheyenne when they broke the  record for the fastest yacht to complete a circumnavigation  58 days 9 hours 32 minutes 45 seconds.

Author

In 2006 she published her autobiography Around the Buoys, chronicling her career as a successful yachtswoman and top-class navigator.

Professional Career

She is an accomplished marine lawyer, meteorologist and mother.

OAM

In 2019 she was on the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for her service to sailing.

Adrienne has pioneered female participation in sailing since her first Sydney to Hobart in 1984 and stands as a role model  not only to young Australian women and men but sailors around the globe.
