Show Your ANZAC Spirit Lane Cove – Light Up the Dawn

Every year Lane Cove comes out in force to watch the Lane Cove ANZAC Day service held in the Lane Cove Plaza.  The Lane Cove RSL Sub-Branch and the Lane Cove Council jointly organise the service.

The service runs for an hour or so and finishes promptly to allow Veterans enough time to travel into the Sydney CBD to march in the ANZAC Day parade.

This year will be a very different ANZAC Day.  Lane Cove residents will not be gathering in Lane Cove Plaza to watch the service or going into the CBD to attend the march.  However, there are still ways to acknowledge ANZAC Day and ensure Australian servicemen and women are appropriately remembered.

NSW RSL ANZAC Day Statement 2020

The NSW RSL has issued the following statement:

“When times are tough, Australians have always relied on the distinctive qualities of mateship, humour, ingenuity, courage and endurance to get us through. Known as the ANZAC Spirit, these five qualities have defined Australians ever since the first troops landed on the beaches of Gallipoli in World War I.

In the current climate, we’re reminding Australians that we all bear these qualities within us, ready to come to the fore when we need them.”

Lane Cove Lights Up the Dawn ANZAC Day 2020

Lane Cove can Light Up the Dawn. At 6 am on ANZAC Day, go to the end of your driveway or stand on your balcony and listen to a brief commemorative service. Together – even while apart – we’ll remember those who served and sacrificed. You can sign the pledge to light up the dawn at rslanzacspirit.com.au

Let others know about this in your street, by notifying them on your Street What’s App group or Street Facebook Page or just do a good old fashioned letterbox drop.  Just copy and paste this link here.

The ABC will broadcast and stream online the National Commemorative Service live from 5.30 am. This will include a minute silence around 6 am, so you can pay your respects wherever you may be; in your living room, at the end of your driveway, on your balcony or wherever you are legally permitted to be.

Estimated Times and How to Listen to the Virtual Service

5.30 am A live broadcast of the National Memorial Service from the Australian War Memorial on ABCTV, iview, Radio and online. This includes from around 6 am, The Last Post and a minute of silence, where we can pay our respects together (but apart).

You can listen to the above via your mobile phone. The ABC listen app connects you to live Radio, so be sure to download the app and select ABC Sydney.

Tips:  It is not unusual for the service to be a few minutes early or later, so do not leave it to 6.00 am on the dot to stand in your driveway/balcony.  It will be cold, so rug up!! Charge your phone the night before.  If you want to listen to the full services from 5.30 am you may want to have some camping chairs outside so you can sit down (and stand up at the relevant times).  Do not leave the chairs out the night before they will be damp. Have them ready to go with you when you walk outside or on to your balcony.

Breakfast and ANZAC Biscuits – after the service make sure you have a family breakfast and then make ANZAC Biscuits (you will need flour and rolled oats so put that on your shopping list)

10.00 am A live broadcast from the ANZAC Memorial, Hyde Park which will be available on ABC Radio and television.

11.30 am: Two-minute reflection which includes The Ode, The Last Post followed by a minute silence across ABCTV, iview, Radio and online

6.55 pm: The Governor-General, David Hurley Anzac Day message on ABCTV and Radio

For more information on AnzacDay, visit: abc.net.au/anzac

If you are unable to stand outside, you can stay inside and listen to live services and/or watch virtual commemorative services on TV.

You can also show your support by using this ANZAC Spirit Facebook profile picture frame.

Music for Mateship

At 6 am on ANZAC Day musicians everywhere are being called on to take to their front yards/balconies to play the Last Post.

James Morrison posted the following on his Facebook Page:

“A grassroots campaign for Australians to commemorate ANZAC Day at dawn in their driveways is gathering momentum across the country.

With traditional services and marches cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, RSL branches in every state have unanimously endorsed the gesture, with families across the nation expected to stand at their gates, on balconies or verandahs at 6 am on Saturday, April 25 2020.

Please join us and the rest of Australia in this special moment to remember all those who have served and sacrificed for this nation.

We may not be able to stand together as we usually would, but we can still stand united in spirit.

Anyone interested should download the sheet music, start practising and notify their neighbourhood via a letterbox drop.”

How Do We Know if Someone Will Place the Last Post in Our Street?

ITC followers have asked ITC to put together an interactive map of musicians who will be playing the Last Post.

Fill out the form below with your street details. We will then put together a map that shows the streets where a musician lives and has nominated to play.  We are not listing street numbers – only street names.

Please note your street will not appear immediately on the map as we have to do a bit of magic before it is uploaded.

Rosemary

Typically, before the ANZAC Day service in the Lane Cove Plaza, the Lane Cove Council hands out Rosemary sprigs. This herb is traditionally worn on ANZAC Day, and sometimes on Remembrance Day.

Why hand out Rosemary? Rosemary is found growing wild on the Gallipoli peninsula and therefore has particular significance for Australians.  For centuries, people have believed this aromatic herb helps improve memory.

You may have noticed that behind the Lane Cove Cenotaph (located near the Lane Cove Library and featured in our cover photo) is a large Rosemary Plant.  ITC will try and find out from Lane Cove Council if they could cut the plant and leave some sprigs for locals to collect on their daily walks.

If you have a Rosemary Plant why not cut some and leave it on your letterbox, gate or fence for your street to collect on their daily walks.

Previous Lane Cove ANZAC Day Services

The ANZAC Day service in Lane Cove is always very personal and local.  A relative of a serviceman or woman will speak about a Lane Cove resident and their wartime experiences.   In the lead up to ANZAC Day, you may want to read some of the previous speeches.
