Lane Cove News Week in Review 27th January to 2nd February 2022

Welcome to our week in review.

Truck Brings Down Powerlines in Riverview

On 27 January 2922, a truck driving along Tambourine Bay Road (near Sofala Avenue) dragged down powerlines (see our cover photo and photo below). Residents and businesses in Tambourine Bay Road and surrounding streets lost power while Ausgrid undertook emergency rectification work.   Power was not restored until the next day.

This is not the first time a truck has run into overhead power lines on Tambourine Bay Road. On 2 December 2020, a truck ran into overhead powerlines, ripping them off the Riverview shopping centre building (see photo below).

Incident 2 December 2020

ITC has written to Ausgrid and asked them if they have plans to review the placement of overhead power lines in this location.

Lifeblood Needs Your Help – Donate Blood at Chatswood

The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has issued a call for new and existing blood donors to come off the bench as the pandemic sidelines an estimated 100,000 donors.

An estimated 20 per cent of the nation’s donors have been unable to donate on any given day in recent weeks due to record numbers of people isolating or currently unwell with COVID-19.

Lifeblood spokesperson Cath Stone said it was as if winter had come early with cancellations and no shows peaking and less than one in two appointments resulting in a donation.

“Traditionally, we see high numbers of no shows and cancellations during the winter months, with many regular donors unwell, but we’ve never seen numbers this high in the middle of summer,” Ms Stone said.

“It’s a real challenge for blood supplies because even in the midst of a pandemic there are still cancer patients, trauma cases, pregnant women and unborn babies who all require donated blood.

“If you are feeling well, and eligible to donate, your team needs you to get off the bench and help out now. You only need to be clear of COVID-19 symptoms for seven days to donate.

“There is no substitute for blood. Cancellations and no-shows are an ongoing problem and new donors are critical to keep supplies flowing to our hospitals.”

Around 4,500 planned donations are being cancelled – or not attended – every day. While Lifeblood encourages people to book in advance, donor centres are currently welcoming walk-ins.

“Unlike some other parts of the world where patients have been unable to get timely blood transfusions, Australia’s blood supply has remained sufficient throughout the pandemic, but we need more blood donations for this to continue,” Ms Stone said.

“Our growing population is relying on just 500,000 blood donors across the country – and right now, many of them need someone else to continue this lifesaving work.

“Donating blood will take only one hour of your time, and every blood donation can help save up to three lives.”

To learn more, call 13 14 95 or visit lifeblood.com.au

The closest donation centre is Chatswood. Shop 62, Platform Level, Chatswood Interchange (located above Woolworths). Accessible by escalator or lift. Parking is available at Westfield car park (Albert Ave).

They are open Monday to Friday, 7 am – 8 pm

Saturday 7 am – 5 pm

Sunday 7 am – 3 pm

A pop-up mobile blood bank is also located at Northpoint, 100 Miller St, North Sydney NSW 2060.

Well done to the Hunter’s Hill Council for sponsoring and promoting the open-air cinema. Let’s hope the cinema comes back next year (without La Nina). Well done to everyone involved.

Police have charged a 32-year-old Newtown man with breaking into the garage of a home on Longueville Road, Lane Cove North and damaging a vehicle, as well as two counts of dishonestly obtaining property by deception.

In early January, police received two reports of locals being scammed while attempting to sell electronics via social media. Both reports were similar in that while attempting to sell a laptop or tablet; the victims agreed to deliver the goods to a unit block in Crows Nest before payment had been received. Enquiries made by police identified the Newtown man as being the alleged offender.

Upon noticing the damage, the owner has alerted police, who commenced an investigation. Police will allege forensic evidence was located at the scene connecting the Newtown man to the damage caused.

Thursday 7-9-year-olds Social Group Program

The SSC Social Group Programs are all about promoting social communication skills, resilience, emotional regulation and confidence. Our term-time group program for 7-9-year-olds is designed and run by speech pathologists and occupational therapists offering group therapy in a fun and natural way. This group program is perfect for primary school children who are working towards social skills goals and need the opportunity for supported interactions with peers in order to practise and generalise social skills concepts.

Term time social programs are lots of fun after a busy day at school and for some children (like adults) being able to attend over the course of a 10-week term (and beyond for those with longer-term goals) friendships and connections have more time to develop.  Book Here.

Monday Teens Social Group Program

The SSC Social Group Programs are all about promoting social communication skills, resilience, emotional regulation and confidence. Our term-time group program for teenagers has been specifically designed to help teenagers navigate friendships, understand the subtleties in teen interactions and be able to successfully communicate within peer groups.

Held in a safe and nurturing environment where the group can practice the learnings shared through interactions with each other, our social program aims to build up these important social skills so participants are more confident at implementing these skills in everyday life.

Term time social programs are lots of fun after a busy day of studying at school and for many teens (like adults) being able to attend weekly allows for long term friendships and connections to develop as they would naturally in other everyday social activities such as attending a youth club, a sports team, games workshops and other leisure interests.

The ultimate aim of our teen groups is that participants feel confident to eventually extend their social networks and join mainstream activities when they feel ready to do so.  With the support of our experienced, nurturing and supportive team it is hoped that our teens can achieve fantastic social outcomes, feel great about themselves and thrive in social situations.  Book Here
