Lane Cove News Week in Review 23rd to 30 November 2022

Welcome to our Lane Cove News week in review.  Another week of windy weather led to a power outage on 28 November 2022 with debris on powerlines.  The outage impacted 1739 Greenwich Residents and 26 Longueville Residents (interesting it was such an isolated area in Longueville).

How Livable Is Lane Cove?

Lane Cove Locals woke up on Sunday (27 November 2022) to an article in the online edition of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun Herald by Andrew Taylor reporting on a recent study conducted by Neighbourlytics that reveals Paramatta offers a better quality of life than Lane Cove.

The article refers to Neighbourlytics State of Australian Neighbourhoods report. However that report does not stack up with the 2021 Australian Livability Census.  The Neighbourlytics report uses social urban data and the Australian Livability Census uses a survey to collate information.  Read more about the different studies here.

Watch the World Cup on the Big Screen at The Canopy

The Australia v Tunisia World Cup Game was shown on the Big Screen at The Canopy.  It was not a huge crowd (see our picture below).  ITC observed that local restaurants emptied out just before 9.00 pm as locals headed home to watch the game.

The games will also be shown on The Canopy Big Screen on:

  • 2 December 6 am
  • 3 December 6 am

Games have been shown most days this week at 6 am.  On 29th November, there was no crowd, which was probably a good thing as The Canopy sprinklers were watering the grass area, so it would have been impossible to sit and watch.

Greenwich Village Games 2,3 and 4 December 2022

The Greenwich Village Games are back after a six-year absence.  They are usually held in the same year as the summer Olympics.  It is a great family-friendly event with 8 teams and participants from 2 – 100.  ITC competed last time, and Mr ITC three-legged race recovery after a near disaster is legendary (in our house).

Events include a canoe relay on the harbour, a mud run in the mudflats, caber toss, tennis ball throw, slow cycle race, various fun relays and gumboot throwing, egg and spoon.

All teams have been practising their skills and a weekend of camaraderie and friendly competition is guaranteed.

Read our article we wrote about the Greenwich Games just before the 2016 event – we go through some history and stats and what makes the Greenwich Games such an awesome community event – ITC thinks every Lane Cove Suburb should have a community event like this.

ABC Radio presenter Josh Szeps spoke to John Tindall, the chairperson of the Greenwich Village Games on his show – you can listen to the interview here.

Even if you participating drop down to Bob Campbell Oval over the weekend and enjoy this community get-together and combination of unique sports.

Lane Cove Sports and Recreation Facility – Grant Funding Approved

On Saturday, 26 November 2022, the NSW Premier announced that Lane Cove Council’s grant application under the Multi Sports Facility Fund had been approved.  Lane Cove Council will receive $5 million towards the building of the Lane Cove Sports and Recreation Facility at 180 River Road Northwood (where the current Lane Cove Golf Club is located).

At the Lane Cove Council October 2022 Meeting, it was noted that a quantity surveyor had “determined the new estimated project value to be $ 78.09M. This is a $458k increase from the previous desktop estimate, however, Council has committed to a total project budget of $75M which will be targeted through design development.”   Further information on the Lane Cove Sports and Recreation Facility is on the Lane Cove Council’s website here.

Busways Continue to Cancel Services

As we mentioned last week, Busways continues to cancel services, and the company has now been nicknamed “Buswas” on Lane Cove Chat by ITC.

The post below sums up the frustration felt by commuters who rely on buses as their only public transportation option into the CBD.

ITC has been invited by Anthony Robert’s Office to attend a meeting on Friday 2 December 2022 with Busways.

Business Alerts

Jack and Co

Since Caltex Longueville/Northwood closed down, we have been asked this question*: What is happening with that site? What will go in there?

We are pleased to say that Jack & Co Food Stores (who have been great ITC supporters and supporters of small producers and farmers) are expanding their Northwood Store – The expanded store will have room for more food and bakery items, customer seating on the side where Caltex used to be (we have even heard rumours of a doggie washing station). Below is the artist’s impression that has been submitted to Lane Cove Council.

*Many Many times but not as many as When is Harris Farm Opening?

Roll’d and Grill’d

ITC has been asked to provide an update on when Grill’d and Roll’d Vietnamese will be opening in Lane Cove.

Grill’d has advised that they will be opening in the New Year and not December as planned.  They are taking over the old TAB building in the Lane Cove Plaza.

Roll’d has no opening date scheduled as yet.  They are taking over the old Oliver Brown store in Lane Cove Market Square.

Gore Creek Valley Action Group Inc Formed

The Gore Greek Valley Action Group Inc has been formed. Its objectives are to “protect the parklands, bushland and serenity of the Gore Creek Valley and keeping it for all the community to enjoy”

The President is Adrienne Cahalan OAM.  You can contact Adrienne here.

Adrienne Told ITC:

“The group is specifically concerned about overdevelopment in and adjacent to Gore Creek Valley – which includes 266 Longueville Road and the Golf Course precinct and the proposed Sport and Recreation Project. It is an action group, so GCVAG are focused on taking action whether politically, legally or otherwise, to save the Valley and its surrounds from development.

On Sunday 20th November our Group hosted Federal MP The Hon Kylea Tink at the Golf Course to review building developments in Longueville Road and the Golf Club.  Kylea stated she was seeking to arrange a meeting with the Mayors of each of North Sydney, Willoughby and Lane Cove together to talk about developing sports facilities on a joint basis. She thought joint venturing a Sport and Recreation facility at Gore Hill made a lot of sense especially the low environmental impact compared to building such a large facility on the golf course parklands. The meeting was attended by many community groups, including Greenwich, Northwood, Osborne Park, Longueville, BCO community Assoc; Sydney Wildlife, Youth for the Environment, and Lane Cove Bushland Society.

We are seeking support from the community to keep the pressure on the local, state and federal authorities by:

Scam Alerts

The North Shore Police Command has reported another text message scam. It is a text from someone claiming to be your bank.

ITC has put together a list of recent scams reported by the North Shore Police Command and also a reminder about the WhatsApp Hi Mum or Hi Dad scam.  Read more here.

In the last week or so WhatsApp Hi Mum scam is ramping up. If you have a family WhatsApp group remind everyone not to do anything unless they call their relative on their usual number and not a random number. The scam might say hi Mum I have a new phone or Hi Mum I have lost my phone.

The “HI Mum” scam has resulted in millions being transferred to scammers.

Parent’s Public Service Announcement

ITC spotted the machine pictured below on Level P2 of the Lane Cove Market Square.  You may want to avoid parking on that level.  The ITC Family used to avoid walking past the Lane Cove Shoe Repair Shop because of the ride on helicopter or train – the helicopter disappeared as a result of COVID19.

Lane Cove Village and St Leonards Parking Study

In our latest week in review, we mentioned the Lane Cove Village and St Leonards Parking Study. Parking is always a hot issue in Lane Cove, so we thought highlighting the study in a separate article might be a good idea. Read our article here:

There are specific recommendations for on-street parking for the following streets:

  • Longueville Road (as far as Dorritt Street)
  • Pheonix Street
  • Little Street
  • Birdwood Avenue
  • Burns Bay Road
  • Rosenthal Avenue
  • Central Avenue
  • Sutherland Street
  • Pottery Lane
  • Coxs Lane
  • Sera Street

This study seems a long time in the making. Lane Cove Council contracted Cardno (now known as Stantec) to undertake a comprehensive study of parking in the Lane Cove Village and St Leonards. Cardno had their contractor physically observe where cars were parked and how long in December 2021. In April and May 2022, Cardno spoke with residents and businesses in the Village through two workshops and an online survey. The report was presented to Lane Cove Council in September 2022 and has been publicly displayed since mid-October and November. It seems strange to request comments on an out-of-date report. We have highlighted in our article why the report is out of date.

Lane Cove Council is asking for your feedback on the draft parking study for Lane Cove Village and St Leonards. The study areas are marked with the red dotted line on the map of Lane Cove below. You can submit comments by 29 November 2022. If you have some comments but can’t submit them by 29 November 2022 call the Acting Coordinator Traffic and Transport on Ph: (02) 9911 3623 or email [email protected] attention Acting Coordinator Traffic and Transport and ask for an extension.

Legionnaires’ Disease After Exposure to Potting Mix

Last week we mentioned that Lane Cove likes to garden (or, going by the number of requests on, ITC Lane Cove Chat for gardening recommendations, likes having a garden). If you use potting mix, be careful.

NSW Health has advised cases of Legionnaires’ disease have increased this year, with more people becoming sick after exposure to Legionella bacteria in bagged potting mix and compost.

When using these products in your garden, it is important you take steps to protect yourself. Always follow the manufacturers’ warnings on bagged potting mix and compost, including:

  • Wetting down potting mix or compost to reduce dust.
  • Wearing a face mask and gloves while handling potting mix or compost.
  • Washing your hands thoroughly afterwards.

Lane Cove Council Sponsorship Policy – Have Your Say

This consultation finishes on 1 December 2022

Lane Cove Council is reviewing their sponsorship policy, specifically who can sponsor council events. They are asking whether property developers and fossil fuel companies should be banned from sponsoring council events (such as the Lane Cove Festival or Festival by the River).

Lane Cove Council is also looking at whether fossil fuel advertising should be banned from council-owned advertising signage (such as bus shelters or other electronic signs or signs in Lane Cove Market Square Car Park).  Council leases out its bus shelter advertising signage to Ooh Media. Sixty Two bus shelters with signage have been leased to Ooh Media until 2035. The proposal to ban fossil fuel advertisers would be for future agreements; it would not change the current contract.

Background

In a notice of motion at the 29 September, 2022 meeting, Clrs Southwood and Bryla moved that Council shall not enter into sponsorship arrangements with property developers. And Clrs Southwood and Roenfeldt moved to potentially ban other groups from sponsoring council events after consultation with the community.

At the same meeting, Clrs Kennedy and Bryla moved that Council update its purchasing policy to avoid advertising fossil fuels on council-owned signage. The motion also put forward that council’s sponsorship policy should ban accepting sponsorships from fossil fuel companies.

As listed in Lane Cove Council’s annual report for 2020/21, Council received funding from these sponsorships:

Sponsor Amount (ex GST) Received for
Hyecorp Property Group $10,000 Lane Cove Festival
Four Frogs Creperie Lane Cove $1500 Lane Cove Festival
BlueFit  $1500 Lane Cove Festival

Please refer to the Minutes of the Ordinary Council Meeting on 29 September 2022.

Security, Crime, Incident and Accident Report

A roving reporter advised us on Tuesday 29th November 2022:

“My father parked his car outside our building on Mowbray Road (next to old petrol station) and this morning he noticed the front passenger side window was broken, he doesn’t keep much so nothing was taken as far as we know. We wanted to put out to see if someone might have seen witness/notice something last night between 9.30 pm to about 11am this morning. Thank you for your help!”
