Lane Cove News Week in Review 10th to 17th May 2023

Welcome to our week in review.

Lane Cove Council to Implement Red Flag System at Sporting Grounds/Ovals

In 2020 a red flag system was implemented at Kingsford Smith Oval to alert dog owners they could NOT use the oval because an organised sport was being played or a training session was in progress.

Lane Cove Council has posted on their website that the red flag system will be introduced at other Lane Cove Council ovals/reserves/parks where sport is played. The red flag system will be used on the following grounds:

  • Kingsford Smith Oval
  • Blackman Park (probably not the synthetic turf oval as dogs are not permitted on the synthetic turf oval at any time)
  • Burns Bay Reserve
  • Bob Campbell Oval
  • Pottery Green
  • Tantallon Oval

The rules are:

No flag = dogs allowed off-leash on oval

Red flag = dogs not allowed on the oval

Lane Cove Council has noted:

“To help make the transition a smooth one, our Rangers will be out and about at the sports fields to help educate residents about the new process.”

It is also a good idea to check to see if organised sport is being played before you head off to a sporting field for an off-leash session with your dog.

Did you know you can check the availability of the Council’s facilities, including sports fields their website?

Sydney Water New Procedures

This week ITC visited the Sydney Water customer hub in Paramatta and met with staff involved in customer service, unplanned water outages, their environmental team and customer advocates.

Sydney Water showed ITC how they monitor water pipe/mains issues and wastewater issues.

We also spent time discussing how Sydney Water will be updating its Water Outage Map and also how they are putting in place new procedures to inform customers about outages.

The biggest issue they face when notifying customers about outages is that their contact is usually the landlord or for apartments built prior to 2014 they only have one connection point. They would like to collect end-user details so they can notify the end-user when there is a problem.

They also showed ITC some of the new monitoring systems they are putting in wastewater systems so they can be notified electronically when the wastewater system is close to overflowing.

ITC will let you know more when Sydney Water are ready to launch some of their new initiatives.

This meeting was a result of ITC preparing a report on the issues arising after the September 2022 Lane Cove water outage. Details here.

RecycleSmart Pick Up – Change In Pick Up Frequency

If you have subscribed to Recycle Smart hard-to-recycle items and soft plastics home pick up service, you may have noticed that the free pickup times have changed and are not monthly.

Recylesmart posted the following on Lane Cove Chat by ITC:

“Hi everyone,

We understand your frustration about the change in frequency of pickups and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Please know that the decision to space out the free collections available was not an easy one. The popularity of our service has been overwhelming, which is a testament to the growing awareness and commitment of Lane Cove residents towards recycling.

Unfortunately, the budget made available by the council has not changed, and we have had to space out the free pickups to ensure that everyone has access to our service. We are currently in talks with your council.

However, we do offer our on-demand Power Pickup service for a small fee of $5 per bag, and monthly subscriptions are also available at the same price. We try to keep this cost as low as possible while still providing the best service possible.

We just sent out another truckload of soft plastics to APR Plastics in Victoria to be recycled. Please visit our website for more information on the process:

Thank you for your commitment to recycling; we really appreciate your dedication!”

Great Reviews for Lane Cove Theatre Company

Lane Cove Theatre Company’s production of Assassins is now playing.

The reviews are in.

The Fourth Wall – read the review in full here.

A four star review of Assassins by Lane Cove Theatre Company. Only six performances remain!

“A common complaint I have heard about theatre in Australia is that too often it is the same shows trotted out over and over again, with very occasionally something new added to the rotation. This is hard to argue with Wicked and Mamma Mia having professional productions this year for the 10,000th time. But I always have the same reaction to those who feel let down by the professional scene here in Australia: “Have you seen what amateur companies are doing? Most amateur companies I know operate on an acceptable loss model, and given enough time to rehearse, talented people on stage, and a can-do attitude, they will bring you shows that you have never heard of and fill a void in the creative space that is needed. This is what struck me about Assassins, presented by Lane Cove Theatre Company. While being penned by the late great Stephen Sondheim, this lesser-known gem is fun, artsy, and cool.”
Stage Whispers Review – read the full review here.

“This is Miriam Rihani’s first direction of a musical and not the easiest of productions to cut her teeth on.  That being said, she has assembled a strong cast and was ably supported by the musical direction experience of Jeremy Kindl and Gianna Cheung.  A particularly poignant moment was the duet between Anderson and Flynn, ‘Unworthy of your Love’.  As is always the case with Lane Cove Theatre Company the costumes were historically accurate and the intimacy of the performance space was used to full advantage.  The addition of a few more scenic devices, even just an American flag or some bunting, would have broken up the black curtain visuals but this is a thought-provoking and entertaining production none-the-less.  Cullen is charming, Burchett is very powerful and Green provides much needed levity to the otherwise dark story.

Assassins plays at The Performance Space @ St Aidan’s until the 28th of May.

Jean Mitchell Lucretia Baths Future

The Lucretia Baths are located in Longueville and they are heritage listed. The Lane Cove Council has closed the baths, due to safety concerns around the structure. The council asked the community to comment on whether the baths should be rebuilt at the cost of $600 000 or whether the baths should be demolished. The majority of comments were in favour of rebuilding the baths.

Will Lane Cove Councillors vote to spend $600 000 on rebuidling the site or will they decide that other community projects are more important?

You can address Lane Cove Council before the meeting on 18 May 2023 and let them know your thoughts. Details here
