Lane Cove News Week in Review 5th to 12th July 2023

Welcome to our week in review.  Lane Cove was quieter this week due to the school holidays.

Lane Cove Public Art

A beautiful new mural has been painted at Pottery Green along the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre Pool wall.

This beautiful indigenous work was created by Grant Molony, Russ Molony and Jason Goulding.  The artwork was commissioned by Lane Cove Council and the Lane Cove Council Public Art Committee was responsible for critiquing and commenting on the artwork at relevant milestones within the project, and for formulating recommendations to Council’s General Manager on whether to proceed at each project stage.

What an amazing addition to Lane Cove!!

The artwork features Lane Cove River, a tawny frogmouth, a cockatoo, local fungi and more.  You can read about Lane Cove’s very own fungi here.

The birds are stunning and were inspired by Balu Moothedath’s bird blog (https://www.tumblr.com/balusbirdblog).  Balu is the president of the Lane Cove Indian Community.

Sydney Water Fined for Polluting Black Rock Creek

Sydney Water has been fined for environmental pollution which impacted the waters of Flat Rock Creek and downstream to Long Bay, Middle Harbour for up to a week in 2020

Sydney Water Corporation has been convicted and fined $365,625 and have separately agreed to pay $500,000 to environmental projects, after around 16 million litres of raw sewage resulted in the relocation of 39 residents in Naremburn in 2020.

The incident was a result of the partial collapse of a sewage pipe and maintenance hole, which caused a blockage in the sewage system. This caused sewage to back-up and overflow at Dawson Reserve and two other locations near Gaza Road and Garland Road, entering Flat Rock Creek.

NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Acting Executive Director, Arminda Ryan said the sewage impacted the waters of Flat Rock Creek and downstream to Long Bay, Middle Harbour for up to a week after the incident.

“The partial collapse of the sewage system at Dawson Street led to a significant amount of raw sewage entering Flat Rock Creek, which can cause harm to aquatic organisms exposed to the sewage-contaminated waters,” Ms Ryan said.

“Local residents were significantly impacted by the incident with reports of sewage odours and 39 people were temporarily relocated from their homes.

“These waterways are much-loved recreational areas for residents in Northern Sydney and we know the local community expects better from Sydney Water.

“We want to protect and restore our local waterways and maintaining the infrastructure of our sewage network is integral to this goal.”

Sydney Water was fined in the Land and Environment Court for three related offences and also entered into an Enforceable Undertaking (EU) with the EPA to address concerns regarding the condition of the collapsed sewage pipe and maintenance hole, and their failure to immediately notify authorities of the incident.

The EU commits $500,000 in funding to North Sydney Council, Willoughby City Council and the Aboriginal Heritage Office to assist with a variety of environmental projects including works within the Flat Rock Creek catchment.

Ms Ryan said Sydney Water now has twelve convictions relating to sewage overflows since 2020.

The Court ordered Sydney Water to write to local residents outlining the court order and incident, and apologise for the overflow and any inconvenience caused, as well as pay the EPA’s legal costs and publish details of the conviction in the Daily Telegraph, Sydney Morning Herald and on its social media accounts.

The EPA encourages the community to report potential water pollution incidents to the Environment Line on 131 555.

For more information about the EPA’s regulatory tools, see the EPA Compliance Policy at www.epa.nsw.gov.au/legislation/prosguid.htm

Car Boot Sale 30 July 2023 – Only a Few Spots Left

Last year ITC spoke to Councillor Kathy Bryla about ways to encourage locals to reduce the number of items in the Lane Cove Council curbside collection pile (which goes straight to the landfill).

ITC mentioned that years and years ago, ITC sold heaps of items at a Car Boot Sale at Lane Cove West Public School, and it was a great way to sell your unwanted items – mainly if you live in an apartment where it is too hard to hold a garage sale.

Councillor Kathy Bryla raised the idea at a Lane Cove Council Meeting.

Forward to 2023, and Lane Cove Council has asked Lane Cove Rotary to run a community car boot sale. The car boot sale is a fundraiser for Lane Cove Rotary, which will use those funds to support local and international charities. The first car boot sale will be on 30 July 2023.

If you would like to book a stall – the link is here

If you enjoy shopping at car boot sales where one person’s unwanted items are another person’s treasure – put 30 July 2023 in your diary.

Crime and Incident Report

Incident at Mowbray Road 12 July 2023

A roving reporter advised ITC that they saw several police and detectives escort a man into a police vehicle today (12 July 2023).  The NSW Police Media Unit advised ITC:

“At about 8am today (12 July 2023), police conducted a police operation on Mowbray Road, Lane Cove North.

A 37-year-old man was arrested, and he was taken to Chatswood Police Station, where he is assisting police with their inquiries.

Inquiries continuing.”

Information Relating to Assault Hunters Hill

Police are appealing for information following an assault last month in Hunters Hill.

At about 5.40 pm Saturday, 10 June 2023, police were called to a bus stop on Gladesville Road, Hunters Hill, following reports of an assault.

Officers attached to Ryde Police Area Command arrived to find a 32-year-old woman with facial injuries.

She was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a stable condition.

Police were told the woman had allegedly been assaulted by an unknown man before a bystander intervened; the man then left the scene.

Police established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the incident.

As inquiries continue, police are looking to speak with a man who may be able to assist police in their investigation.

He is described as being of a Caucasian appearance, aged between 20 – 30 years old, 178cm tall and having short brown hair.

At the time of the incident, he was seen wearing a green jacket, black pants and black shoes.

As inquiries continue, police are urging anyone with CCTV footage or information about the incident to contact Ryde police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

Week in Review Sponsor – Health Space Lane Cove

Located in the Village green, right next to Zjoosh, this clinic is unique in approach as it offers a wide variety of services under one roof.

The team consists of chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, a nutritionist and a naturopath. Having all these modalities together, give patients an opportunity to conveniently address any health concerns a person may present with.

Local and head Chiropractor Nicholas Miller told ITC “Our main focus is to really get people not only out of pain or to get rid of symptoms but to help support their health journey. We often have people come in to see one particular modality, and then start seeing another, to help address the health concerns. We want to make it easy for people, rather than having to go to 2 or 3 different clinics, people just have to go to one.  This allows us to often get faster results because we can clearly communicate and work together as a team. Education is a big key for us, health is a combination of physical, chemical and emotional components, understanding how our lifestyles are drivers of our health is pertinent”

The clinic sees a large diverse range of demographics and cases, from young and old, high-level athletes, to office-bound adults and everything in between.
