Lane Cove News Week in Review 20th to 26th January 2019

Welcome to our week in review and it was a big week in Lane Cove!!

Australia Day

Congratulations to the four Lane Cove residents who were honoured in this year’s Australia Day Honours list. They were honoured for their contribution to medical, scientific and community work. One person was honoured for their work with the Irish/Australian Community.  Read more here.

On Australia Day the Lane Cove plaza was packed with locals taking place in an Australia Day Citizenship ceremony.

It was also the week that Daryl Brathwaite performed in the front garden of a Lane Cove house.  ITC has to admit it was her house after she won a competition as part of WSFM and NESCAFÉ #meettheneigbour promotion.  ITC’s neighbours rocked out to four Daryl classics including Horses!!!!

Update on Centennial Avenue/Epping Roadworks

The roadworks were supposed to start on 21 January 2019.

The roadworks were delayed and will start on Tuesday 29th of January 2019. Initially work will only be undertaken at night . The works compound in Turrumburra Park (which will mean vehicles exiting and entering the site) will not be set up until Feb 2019.  If you would like to know more about the roadworks read more here.

Last Week’s Power Outage in Riverview/Lane Cove and Lane Cove West

Ausgrid advised ITC that last week’s power outage was due to a low voltage issue (the third time this has happened in this area). After doing some research it appears that there are two main reasons for this:

  • a sag in voltage for a short period; or
  • a sustained reduction in the system voltage level for a period of time (sometimes described as a brownout).

Common causes of undervoltage conditions include the start-up of large loads or other long-term system faults.  It was a cooler day on the day of the outage, so sustained use of air-conditioning was not a factor.

Building Works on Mowbray Road Started

A roving reporter snapped this photo of building works on Mowbray Road Lane Cove North. It’s the old petrol station site that has been vacant for years (which also used to be Mowbray Gardens).

Lane Cove Real Estate

This week media reports on the housing market has named Lane Cove as one of the markets impacted by the housing downturn, Lane Cove recorded the second biggest drop of 18.2 per cent to a median of $1.8 million.

Many people have asked ITC about the two houses that have been vacant for years on the corner of Austin Street and River Road West. The house on the high side is now for sale. It has been uninhabited for 30 year so needs a complete renovation. The property is for sale with Belle Property Lane Cove

Lane Cove Crime

We know ITC sounds like a broken record, but there were more disturbing crimes in Lane Cove this week.  ITC has spoken to the Crime Prevention Officer at the Lower North Shore Command to find out what can be done to reduce this current crime wave.  ITC was told that in the first 16 days of 2019 there were 24 property related incidents reported to police (note:  property related crimes – break and enters, motor vehicle thefts and break-ins, property theft and mail box theft).  ITC was advocating for more police patrols and presence in Lane Cove.

This week the police were involved in a high speed police chase along Military Road. NSW Police revealed the vehicle had been stolen during a break and enter at a home on Taleeban Road, Riverview.

On Monday 21st January, ITC reported police activity in Hallam Avenue Lane Cove. Police advised a 14 year old boy was robbed and police are appealing for witnesses. Please let any of your friends who live in Lane Cove West know about this incident as they may have CCTV or dash cam vision. Read more here.

The following incidents were reported to ITC or posted on ITC Lane Cove Chat.

“I was working from home for a few hours yesterday and the doorbell rang followed by a loud banging on the security screen door. I thought it may have been a courier with a parcel but when I opened the door it was a young man in his twenties with a bumbag around his shoulder asking for directions to Lane Cove shops.

We live in Bridge Street, so it’s not far, so that’s what I told him as I pointed him up the road (still standing behind my locked screen door). I knew he was dodgy, so I just kept it short. He kept on looking past me as I spoke, and I knew he was casing the joint, so I told him that there is an APP called Google Maps for what he was after and told him goodbye.

As he walked away down my footpath back to the street, there was a car waiting for him (purple hatchback) with another young man in the driver’s seat.

The man I was speaking to shook his head at the driver and they disappeared. They were obviously casing the house, and thought no-one was home as I had parked my car on the street (not in the driveway)

So, please just watch out and be careful. I tried to get the number plate of their car but by the time I got to the road, they were gone.”

Another local reported the following:

“Possible stranger alert, River Rd at corner of Greenwich Rd, Greenwich lights at 2:45pm. Man said Hi and repeatedly asked my son where he lived. When my son said it’s private and I’m not telling you, he kept trying other ways to find out. Then he asked what school my son goes to. When the lights changed, my son crossed the road and ran. The man headed west down the hill along River Rd towards Stella Vista Ave/Greenwich Hospital
.
He’s described as about 175cm tall, wearing a red shirt with black/brown hair and brown skin. No backpack, solid build.

This could have been innocent, but the insistent questioning made me suspicious.”

The above matter was reported to the police and the child involved was interviewed by detectives.

Back To School

It will be back to school for kids next week, please remember school zones will apply from Tuesday (they apply even if it is a pupil free day – so don’t park in a school zone).  If you are looking for local activities for kids of all ages from babies to HSC students we have put together the ultimate guide.  Read more here.

Trendsetter Travel is small but successful, with a mission to do the best by their clients!

When Trendsetter Travel was established in April 1992, they had no guaranteed clients. As a completely new business, they knew the only way to survive and succeed was to make each travel experience count. They believed that happy customers would come back… and they did… they told their friends and business colleagues. So here we are still, loving every minute of what we do!

Buoyed by the success of their Longueville agency, Adrienne (Trendsetter’s founder) expanded the network in November 2009 to a new site within Lane Cove Market Place at Lane Cove so that locals closer to that locale could enjoy the same great deals and service.

Trendsetter can organise any trip you want to take. So speak to their consultants today. If you are an avid golfer, you may want to speak to Trendsetter about their bespoke golf tours.
