Lane Cove News Week in Review 26 May to 2 June 2019

    Water Restrictions

Just a reminder that Water Restrictions kicked in on Saturday 1st June.  More info here.

    Vandalism

Some idiots decided to vandalise the greens at Lane Cove Golf Club last weekend. They wrote Mal and Meg in the greens.  Lane Cove Golf Club works hard with the Lane Cove Council to keep the course looking great and this is such a shame.

    A Baby in a Hurry

This beautiful baby (pictured below) was born in his parents’ car on Penrose Street Monday. The baby’s Dad is Daily Telegraph writer Ben Horne. We were told by a roving reporter her partner; Marissa Robbins was on the scene.  Our roving reporter advised:

“Marissa raced out the front door in her PJ’s and ugg boots when she heard a woman’s screams coming from the street. Rather than finding someone being stabbed she found a lady giving birth on the back seat of her car! She raced back in the house to get towels and by the time she returned the ambulance had arrived and the baby was born! Who says Lane Cove is boring!??!!!”

    Round Up

A landmark court decision in the USA awarded a couple a huge payout when a jury concluded that Round Up caused their cancer.  This has put the use of Round Up well and truly in the news again and several council have the use of Round Up under review. Lane Cove Council continues to use Round Up.  Read more here.

    Housing Revival

Lane Cove is one of the suburbs tipped to lead the housing market revival. Good news if you are selling. Bad news if you are buying.  Read more here.

    Noisy Work on Epping Road

Residents around Epping Road were not happy on Monday night. ITC was flooded with complaints about the noise being made as trees were being chopped down and mulched on Epping Road. Works were also scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

This is what one person said:

“Don’t know if you’ve received any other contact about this issue last night, but the Lane Cove Council chose 2:30am to chainsaw a series of trees in an apartment block on Epping Road, and then continued to mulch the entire cut, kept going with the chainsaw to remove the entire stump and then walked around with leaf blowers.
    All between 2 30 am – 4 30am. Why on earth couldn’t this be done at 10pm?”

We asked Lane Cove Council why the work was schedule for early morning.  This was Lane Cove Council’s response:

“Due to track works on the Epping-Chatswood Rail line there are currently increased bus services using Epping Rd between 6.30 am and 9.30 pm. Roads and Maritime Services therefore specified that lanes must not be closed during these hours and the tree removals must be completed outside of normal hours.

In other words, the contractor could only carry out the work during the night due to RMS restricted hours imposed on them.

Before the cutting of the trees, the contractor needed to move machines into place and prepare the site – which had to be done after 9.30pm, therefore the cutting couldn’t start until this was done.

A number of measures were taken to minimise the noise on Monday and Tuesday:

    • Works were undertaken as efficiently as possible to try and complete the bulk of the works over two nights rather than three – which was successful (bulk of works completed early Wednesday morning);
    • Large logs were transported off site for chipping – as chipping machines are noisy.”

    Recycling Fail

A Roving Reporter saw the soft plastic recycling was being placed in a general recycling bin by Coles.  Members of ITC Lane Cove Chat were not impressed.  When ITC contacted Coles and Redcycle for a comment they agreed to look into this matter.

    Coles Statement

“We are investigating this particular incident to ensure all plastic that can be recycled, is being recycled.

Unfortunately, there are times when our front-of-house REDcycle bins get contaminated with food or other general waste. In these instances, REDcycle cannot recycle this plastic and it must be sent to landfill.

We continue to work on ways to reduce contamination levels through better signage, moving the location of the bin and changing the design of the lid.

Coles Lane Cove gets collections from REDcycle twice per week and last year rescued more than 2.9 tonnes of plastic (equivalent to about 740,000 pieces of plastic that would otherwise go to landfill).”

     REDcycle Statement

We have made Coles Head office aware of this and they are currently investigating.

To confirm, we collect weekly from Coles and Woolworths – often twice weekly (in fact we have 6 weekly collections between the two stores) and are getting approx. 60 bags a week from these two stores.

Whilst we understand people’s concerns about these matters, there is usually an explanation for such rare occurrences – anything from there has been contamination, or confusion for staff between the Back of House plastics (which we do not collect) and the REDcycle plastics, or sometimes human error.  It would be preferable and more beneficial if people direct these matters to us initially to investigate.  We can immediately look into what has occurred and resolve any issues as quickly as possible.  As you’ve mentioned, this post has created community outrage, which in turns creates distrust in what we work very hard to achieve.

As mentioned, this is currently being investigated by Coles’ Head Office, who will resolve this particular matter as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, your community can be assured that RED Group takes these matters very seriously, and we do all we can to address them and to maintain the integrity of the REDcycle programme nationwide.

    Snap Send Solve

Lane Cove Council is refusing to pay 22 cents per resident to use Snap Send Solve. A system that allows residents to quickly report incidents to council and provide photos. The system integrates with local council reporting systems. ITC has started a petition for Lane Cove Council to subscribe to the system. Please sign and share the petition here. To find out more about Snap Send Solve read more here.
