Welcome to our Lane Cove News week in review.

Historic Northwood Home Goes Up in Flames

This week’s most talked about story is the 62 Cliff Road Northwood fire. The historic home went up in flames on Saturday Night.

The Police Media Unit has told ITC the following:

On Sunday morning,Fire and Rescue NSW sent in a specialist dog team to inspect the ruins of the property.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said:

“Fire and Rescue NSW has three dogs that have the capacity to identify or eliminate the use of flammable liquid after a fire.”

On Monday morning, the police door-knocked neighbours to see if they had any CCTV.

Lane Cove Bus Interchange – Lifts

ITC constantly contacts Transport for NSW about the lifts at the Lane Cove Bus Interchange not working. We first wrote an article about the lifts not working in April 2016

The Lifts had been boarded up for weeks on both sides.

Transport for NSW has advised that they worked on the lifts last week. The boards were removed, but the lifts are still out of action. We have been advised they are trying several different solutions to get the lifts working – they will provide an update to us soon.

Lane Cove Sport

Well done to the St Michael’s Junior Football Club for donating their old sports kit to Kit Bag For Kids.

They wanted ITC to let people know about Kit Bag For Kids in case other sporting organisations in the area have old kits they would like to donate (for example, when you change sponsors.)

The picture below is of players from Newcastle Waters (south of Katherine, NT) wearing the St Michaels football club kit at the inaugural Tennant Creek football competition.

Over the weekend, the NSW State Junior Short Course Swimming Championships were held. Lane Cove Swim Club was well represented.

Congratulations to Maksim, who qualified for the NSW State Championships Long Course in the 11 years boys 50 m breaststroke and to Shiori, who qualified in the ten years girls 50m backstroke – both swam Personal Bests at the Championships.

The following was reported to ITC:

“Helen Street residents, beware, a male in a black hoodie is checking garages and access doors of units. Please challenge persons who are present on your premises but are not residents. This guy was suspicious – 31 August, 12.30 pm.”

Police Reports

Armed Robbery – 03/09/2022

Police are investigating after a 66-year-old male was allegedly robbed at knifepoint in his unit in Lane Cove West over the weekend (Saturday, 3rd September). A male known to the victim allegedly entered the unit and bound the victims’ hands together before producing a knife, demanding property and valuables from him. The victim complied with the male’s request, and the male was last seen leaving in a vehicle along Penrose Street, Lane Cove West.

Detectives attached to North Shore Police Area Command have commenced an investigation into the incident and are asking anyone that may have noticed any suspicious activity on Penrose Street around 4:30 pm on Saturday 3rd September to, please contact North Shore Police on 9414 8499 or Crime Stoppers (1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppers.com.au).

Stealing – 06/09/2022 Artarmon

Police have charged four males after a stealing incident in Artarmon and are still searching for two more.

Around 3:00 pm Tuesday 6th September, police received several calls to an electronics store in Artarmon in relation to a “swarming” incident.

Police will allege that six males entered the store and made their way to the electronics display counter, where they ripped a number of electronic devices from their alarmed security cables causing significant damage, before running from the store.

While responding to the incident, police observed one of the males running from the scene. Police followed the male into an undercover garage of a unit complex on Hampden Road, Artarmon, where they located four of the males, who were arrested. In the garage, police located a number of electronic devices which they will allege were stolen from the electronic store.

The four males were conveyed to Chatswood Police Station, where they were all charged with shoplifting, malicious damage to property and Participate Criminal Group. All were bail refused to appear at Hornsby Local Court today (Wednesday, 7th September).

Police are still searching for the other two males and are calling for any witnesses to come forward, please contact Chatswood Police Station on 9414 8499 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Accident Mowbray Road

It was raining on the weekend, and there was yet another accident at the notorious Mowbray Road Bend. In the Cove is nearly ten years old, and since we have been around, we have constantly received complaints about the number of accidents on Mowbray Road Lane Cove North. There is a bend in the road near an unoccupied site that used to be a Caltex Service Station, and it is an accident hotspot. Read more here.

The vehicle ended up backwards, in the middle of the pedestrian refuge, lucky no one was standing there, and no injuries were reported. (see our cover photo).
