The successful Sirens of Gunnedah exhibition is now in Lane Cove. Gunnedah is Lane Cove’s sister city and over recent years the connection has become stronger and stronger as our sister city continues to battle the drought and the impact on their community.
Gunnedah photographers Alyssa Barwick and Marie Low Sirens of Gunnedah opened at Gallery Lane Cove on July 29, 2020. The Gallery Lane Cove exhibition has been made possible by the support of Lane Cove Council and a grant from Gunnedah Shire Council through its new Sister Cities and Friendly Relationships Program.
Gunnedah Women as Sirens
Alyssa Barwick and Marie Low had a vision of creating an alternate world for Gunnedah women during the heart-breaking time of the drought. They set about photographing women of all ages and all walks of life.
The women were photographed in different moments in time or as stars of different concepts – from a modern mermaid to the girls at Hanging Rock, a war-time nurse, Rosie the Riveter, to a futuristic robot. All of them were photographed in Gunnedah.
“We are absolutely thrilled that Sirens is making its way to our sisters in the city,” Alyssa Barwick said. “We have been overwhelmed by the response to what started as a dream for us and, through the support of the Gunnedah community, became a reality.
Marie Low said the Gallery Lane Cove exhibition would bring conceptual photographic portraits of more than 50 Gunnedah women to a new audience.
“So many people have helped Sirens of Gunnedah become a success,” Marie said. “Along with our Sirens, we have had talented hair stylists, make-up artists and people who have helped through their businesses, as individuals, or through community groups. They have given their time and sometimes their homes to help create the Sirens images.
“It is wonderful that the beautiful faces of these women of all ages and all walks of life will now be seen in a gallery at the heart of a region that has helped Gunnedah through the difficult time of drought.”
The exhibition was one of the most-visited that has been hosted at the Gunnedah Bicentennial Creative Arts Gallery.
Become a Lane Cove Siren
Alyssa Barwick and Marie Low will also hold a competition in conjunction with the exhibition called #SydneySirensSelfie. Visitors are encouraged to take a photo of themselves with one of the Sirens images and post it on social media with the hashtag #SydneySirensSelfie. One person will win their own Sirens session.
Exhibition Opens July 29 2020
Sirens of Gunnedah will be on display at Gallery Lane Cove from July 29 until August 22. So put those dates in your diary. Grab some friends, see the exhibition and then have some lunch in Lane Cove.
